The Estate and Vineyards
Keermont Vineyards is a farm located in a back valley outside of Stellenbosch, ZA. The name comes from Keerweder, which is the name of the former farm. A keerweder is a dead end in a valley - it literally translates to ‘blocked again’, as the early settlers were blocked by the terrain when they tried to pass through the valley.
Winery and vineyards are located in the shadow of Guardian Peak (official name is Suurberg).
The mountain fruit here is similar to the grapes grown at the Howell Mountain AVA in Napa Valley.

Keermont Vineyards’ history can be traced back to 1694 when Jan Jac van Dyk owned most of the land in the Blaauwklippen Valley, including the land where Waterford, Dornier and Stellenzicht Wine Estates are found today. His is the earliest record of a European landowner using this area for agricultural purposes. After Jan Jac van Dyk, many landowners, realizing the potential and beauty of the Blaauwklippen Valley, moved into the area and gradually the land was divided and sold off as separate farms.

In 2003, the Wraith family moved to the Western Cape from Gauteng and bought Fleurfontein as well as Keerweder III. These two farms are now farmed as one Estate known as Keermont Vineyards. Mark and Monica Wraith currently live on Keermont Vineyards with their family.
2005 saw the start of a major vineyard planting program on lands that had been fallow for a number of years. The planting program is now complete with nearly 27 ha under vine. In 2010, a spring water bottling plant, which had been built on Fleurfontein by Graham Boonzaier, was converted into a fully functional winery complete with offices, tasting room, processing facilities and barrel rooms.

Total farm acreage is 157 hectares (388 acres) with 27 hectares under vine.
- 18 hectares Red varietals – Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah
- 9 hectares White varietals – Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay and Viognier
Some of the Chenin Blanc vines are forty plus years old and are used by De Trafford winery.
The owner is businessman Mark Wraith and the wine maker is Alex Starey. No fining or filtration is practiced at this estate. The first release vintage of 2007 yielded a tiny crop of five barrels or about 108 cases (12/750ml size).
The philosophy in the vineyards tends towards the natural rather than the scientific.
They aim to create wines that reflect the beautiful place from which they come and the particular year’s vintage conditions. For this reason, they try to use less chemical fertilizers, fewer pesticides and to irrigate as little as possible. They hope to achieve natural, well-balanced vineyards that ultimately yield better quality wines

The goal of this estate is to make superior blends. The wines to be produced, but not written in stone, are:

A)
Keermont Red – 40 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 20% Syrah.
B)
Keermont White – 70% Chenin Blanc, 30% Viognier and Chardonnay
C)
Dessert wine in exceptional vintages
D)
Keermont Syrah – Syrah, Mourvedre, Viognier

See Keermont's article in Hogsheadwine ( http://www.hogsheadwine.com )

Also, Keermont will be featured in the 2012 platter's Guide. All 3 of Mullineux Wines (2009 Syrah, 2010 White and 2010 Straw Wine) have been awarded 5 Stars in the upcoming 2012 Platters Guide. It is the first time that a winery has received 5 stars for all the wines in a range.

2010 Keermont White Blend
Terrasse 6/750ml
UPC code
: 7 84585 01377 7
Made from 88% Chenin Blanc, 7% Chardonnay, 5% Viognier
The KEERMONT TERRASSE 2010 is our maiden release white blend. It derives its name from the terraced vineyards from which the grapes are harvested. The backbone of the blend is Chenin blanc and this is complimented by small portions of Chardonnay and Viognier. Total production was just six barrels yielding 1575 bottles. All grapes used in producing this wine were grown on Keermont Vineyards. Small parcels of grapes were specifically selected, harvested by hand and were gently and naturally vinified. The wine was fermented and then spent a further 11 months maturing on the lees in French oak barrels. Bottling was carried out by hand without filtration, so if you are lucky you may find a little lees in the bottom of your bottle.

Tasting note: an attractive light autumn yellow colour, lime and melons on the nose with light oak and nut aromas, palate defined by a central core of fresh acidity with layers of fruit and rich lees. Drink now through 2020.

"A blend of 88% Chenin Blanc, 7% Chardonnay and 5% Viognier, the 2010 Terrasse was raised in 2nd and 3rd year French oak. It has fine delineation on the nose with lime flower, coconut, patisserie and a touch of brioche. The palate is vibrant and fresh on the entry with good acidity, a nice citrus seam that cuts through the vanilla and almond-tinged fruit with impressive precision on the saline finish. Bon vin! Drink now-2016.
Keermont Vineyards is a bright star on the horizon. Owned by Mark and Monica Wraith, the first of their 27-hectares was planted only in 2005, located at 250-400m altitude in the Blaauwklippen Valley in the shadow of Guardian Peak. There is a very artisanal approach here, winemaker Alex Starey overseeing elegant wines that belie their intensity. I tasted the wines both blind and with Alex himself, before he rushed off with his surfboard. Importer: Kysela Pere & Fils, Winchester, VA; tel. (540) 722-9228."

Made from 60% Sauvignon and 40% Chenin Blanc.
Sugar at harvest: 45.9 Brix
Residual Sugar: 126 Gr / Liter

The KEERMONT FLEURFONTEIN 2010 is our maiden release DESSERT WINE. It derives its name from the name of the portion of the farm from which the grapes are sourced. The wine is produced by pinching the stems of the grapes while they hang on the vine. This stops the translocation of fluids into and out of the grapes and allows them to slowly dry out on the vine. The raisins are harvested a few weeks later and the syrupy juice is squeezed from them with a hard pressing process. The syrup ferments in barrel and is left to mature for 12 months. Total production was just one barrel yielding 580 bottles. All grapes used in producing this wine were grown on Keermont Vineyards. Bottling was carried out by hand without filtration, so if you are lucky you may find a little lees in the bottom of your bottle.

Tasting note: an attractive autumn yellow gold colour, powerful apple, lime and melons on the nose with light oak and nut aromas, palate defined by a central core of fresh acidity which balances the sweetness and layers of fruit and rich lease. Drink now through 2020.

"A blend of 60% Sauvignon Blanc and 40% Chenin Blanc made from grapes dried on the vine, this 2010 Fleurfontein has superb definition on the nose with Sauternes-like honeyed fruits with great purity and definition. The palate has very good acidity and tension to cut through the 126g/l sugar, leading to a mouth-caressing, understated finish with honey, pear, quince and vanilla. Drink now-2016+.

"High natural acidity gives the Fleurfontein a surprisingly refreshing character despite its sweetness. A honeysuckle, toasted nut, and orange flower bouquet gives way to a semi-dry palate of intense ripe peach, melon and apricot. Made from vine-dried Sauvignon Blanc (60%) and Chenin Blanc (40%).

2009 Keermont Syrah
6/750ml
UPC code
: 7 84585 01378 4
Made from 100% Syrah

Keermont Syrah 2009 is 100% Syrah from a north facing vineyard on the slopes of the Helderberg. Soils are deep red clay loam derived from quartzitic sandstone. Total production was just four barrels (one 500Lt; and three 225Lt barriques) yielding 1528 bottles. Small parcels of grapes were specifically selected according to ripeness and harvested by hand. The grapes were gently and naturally vinified in open top fermenters and spent about 18 days on the skins. The wine spent 22 months maturing in French oak barrels before being bottled by hand without filtration.

Tasting note: Deep, dark brooding red colour. Intense spicy clove and fynbos aromas with hints of dark chocolate. Full, dry, spicy palate with layers of dark fruit. Drink now through 2020.

"Just 1,500 bottles of the 2009 Syrah were sourced from deep red loam/granite soils at 350m altitude. It has a superb bouquet with blackberry, white pepper, white fennel and a touch of game that you could mistake for a Cote-Rotie. The palate is very elegant and well defined on the entry with palpable mineralite and finesse on the finish. Understated and very refined, South Africa needs more Rhone blends of this calibre. Drink now-2018.

UPC code: 7 84585 01299 2
Made from 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 20% Syrah.
The specially selected parcels of grapes from their best vineyards were gently and naturally vinified before spending 20 months in second fill French oak barrels. Bottling was carried out by hand without any fining or filtration.

"The 2008 Keermont has dark berries, allspice and a touch of cedar on the crisp nose that offers elusive scents of brine and seaweed with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruits on the supple entry, ripe sappy tannins and a structured, well-focused finish. It does not quite have the panache of the 2007 and lacks the same length, but it is patently handcrafted and blossoms with aeration. Drink now-2016.

The specially selected parcels of grapes from their best vineyards were gently and naturally vinified before spending 20 months in second fill French oak barrels. Bottling was carried out by hand without any fining or filtration.

Excellent Bordeaux crossed with Rhone Valley aromas, smooth, rich and serious red. Well structured long finish – exceptional first release red. 1,300 bottles or 108 cases available. 100% French Oak.

To quote Chris Mullineux, “This winery will be producing some of the best red wines out of South Africa, very soon.”

Thirty –five months aging before release on Keermont Red.

Twenty months oak aging.
Fifteen months bottle aging.

"A blend of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 20% Shiraz, the 2007 Keermont has a lifted bouquet of mulberry, blackberry, white pepper and a touch of iodine. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grainy tannins and a dash of white pepper. It is very elegant and displays wonderful tension towards the fresh, shimmering finish. This is drinking beautifully now but should age well over 4-5 years.

"(40% each cabernet sauvignon and merlot, plus 20% syrah): Saturated, deep ruby-red. Brooding aromas of crushed cassis, blackberry, bitter chocolate, licorice and mint, lifted by clove oil and violet; rather New World in style. Supple and concentrated but a bit youthfully clenched on the palate, with very dark flavors of black fruits, violet, dark chocolate, mint and spicy oak. Finishes savory and dry, with palate-dusting tannins and a late note of licorice. I'd like to come back to this in a year or three. A winery to watch."
