The goal of Fair Trade is to empower farmers and farm workers to lift
themselves out of poverty by investing in their farms
and communities, and at the same time protecting the
environment and teaching them business skills to
compete globally.
History of Fair Trade

Started in the 1940’s by church groups for jute goods,
crafts and cross-stitch items
·
1960’s – Fair Trade movement was
political and anti-imperialistic (European based)
·
1980’s – Movement became stale,
switched from crafts to agricultural commodities
·
1988 – Certification process
begins in the Netherlands
·
2002 – FLO launches international
Fair Trade Certified Market – Now one unified symbol.
