Thorn Clarke - Terra Barossa
Barossa Valley (Australia)

The Estate
The winery owners are David and Cheryl Clarke (born Thorn) and their son Sam is the manager of the winery. The Thorn-Clarke family has a long history in the Barossa - six generations of involvement in the region's world famous wine industry. The Thorns have been grape growers in the Barossa since the 1870's. David Clarke's passion for the wine industry lead to the planting of the Kabininge vineyard outside of Tanunda in 1987, which represents the start of a deeper involvement by the family in the Barossa wine industry.

"The 2009 Terra Barossa Winemakers Selection 1 Litre Shiraz gives a very deep garnet-purple color and aromas of warm black cherry and fruits of the forest with some allspice and a whiff of white pepper. Medium-full bodied with a medium level of grainy tannins, it’s generous with the mid-palate ripe fruit flesh and the finish is medium-long. Drinking now, it should remain fresh to 2014."

"The 2008 Terra Barossa Shiraz Winemaker’s Selection was aged in French and American oak. A glass-coating opaque purple color, it is ripe, rich, yet light on its feet. Flavorful, layered, and well-balanced, it will evolve for 2-3 years and offer a drinking window extending from 2011 to 2020. It is an outstanding value.
Thorn-Clarke is a fine source for values from Australia. There are three levels of wine, the Milton Park series lined priced at $13, the Terra Barossa series line priced at $15, and the Shotfire series line priced at $24. Typically they can be found discounted at hard to resist prices."

2011 Thorn-Clarke, Terra Barossa, Shiraz, Barossa 12/750ml
#A0EE294126SZL
UPC code: 8 53065 00051 1
REGION: Barossa
HARVEST DATE: March 2011
ALCOHOL: 14.5%
VINTAGE CONDITIONS: This vintage had a cool, slow ripening period which has in turn produced elegant red wines.
WINEMAKING: The grapes are crushed and de-stemmed into fermenters. Yeast is added immediately once in fermenter and the ferments are pumped over twice
daily to maximise color, tannin and flavor extraction. Cooling is used to ensure ferments remain in the 22-25 degrees Celcius range which will allow the fruit to display maximum fruit expression. Pressing then occurs approximately seven days after crushing and the wine is then put into predominantly American oak to mature.
BARREL AGING: 12 months in American oak.
TASTING NOTES: Lighter in style than usual, the wine offers aromas of sweet berry fruits, plums, pepper and spice. There is rich fruit on the palate displaying plums, blackberry and sweet spice from the subtle oak. Nice soft tannins are accompanied by great length of fruit flavor.

ALCOHOL: 14.5%
VINTAGE CONDITIONS: The 2010 vintage followed good winter rainfall in 2009 and allowed the vineyards to commence the 2010 season with good soil moisture levels. This soil moisture, combined with moderate weather conditions throughout most of the growing season allowed for good fruit set and canopy development. In summary an excellent vintage, with very little extreme weather resulting in fantastic color and flavor in red varietals, and excellent acid and flavor
profiles for whites.

Deep red color. The wine is deep and rich smelling with dark fruits, plums, spice and oak. There is very rich fruit on the palate with plums, blackberry and sweet spice from the oak. The palate is vibrant and young with a flavorsome viscous mouthfeel which will develop complexity with time. "
I guess the quality of this merlot suggests that when you get a great vintage like this one you can actually turn out something pretty good from this variety. Spicy plum and dark chocolate vanilla bean on the nose. The palate is so supple yet with a firm thread of fine tannin and oak in support. This is a substantial statement for merlot and well worth checking out."
- West Australian (19th January 2012), 93 Pts

"As with the 2009, the colour is good, the bouquet expressive and the medium- to full-bodied palate is full of plum and fruitcake flavours. The spine of savoury/spicy tannins provides structure and eliminates the ‘sweet and simple’ tag that merlots at this price can deliver. Value plus; drink or cellar for a year of two."

Crushed, destemmed and then pressed using a membrane press. Pressings were not used. Fermented using French Yeast at 12-15 degrees Celcius. The ferment was kept slow and cool to retain all the natural flavors of the grape. The wine was then racked and filtered. Bottling took place soon afterwards so the wine was a true expression of the grape and the terroir from which it was made.
The wine is a very pale straw with a green tinge. The nose has lifted lemon sherbet and a lime fragrance. The palate is medium bodied with subtle and elegant sweet lemon fruit. Combined with the clean racy acid the flavor builds in the mouth and results in a long finish of intense fruit with lime and lemon rind.
