Thorn Clarke - Port
Barossa Valley (Australia)

The Estate
The winery owners are David and Cheryl Clarke (born Thorn) and their son Sam is the manager of the winery. The Thorn-Clarke family has a long history in the Barossa - six generations of involvement in the region's world famous wine industry. The Thorns have been grape growers in the Barossa since the 1870's. David Clarke's passion for the wine industry lead to the planting of the Kabininge vineyard outside of Tanunda in 1987, which represents the start of a deeper involvement by the family in the Barossa wine industry.

The Vineyards
This Port has been made from the traditional Tawny varieties of Grenache, Mataro and Shiraz, and has been blended to an average age of 10 years. Each year, a selected amount of 10 year old wine is taken from oak barrels and used for bottling. That wine is replaced with specially selected younger wines. This is called the "Solera system" and ensures a very high and consistent standard.

Thorn-Clarke, 10 year old "Tawny Port", 12/500ml
A wonderful example of aged Tawny. A rich, golden brown color with hints of red, the bouquet is of aged fruit and rancio. A cascade of luscious, sweet fruit flavors greet the palate while a smooth, silky texture integrates with the classic rancio and oak characters.

"The sensational 10-Year-Old Tawny Port, made from Grenache, Mataro, and Shiraz, exhibits a dark amber color as well as a fabulous sweet nose of crushed berries, Chinese black tea, caramel, and buttered nuts. Its sweetness is buttressed by decent acidity. It is hard to know how long a wine such as this will last."

"Amber-brown. High-toned nose features orange, cherry, coffee, caramel, toffee and nutmeg. Sweet and sappy, with a not-unpleasant volatile quality that's reminiscent of a dry oloroso sherry; orange and cherry flavors are nicely dry-edged and penetrating. Finishes with notes of candied pecan, walnut, date and fig and impressive length."
