Thorn Clarke - William Randell
Barossa Valley (Australia)

The Estate
The winery owners are David and Cheryl Clarke (born Thorn) and their son Sam is the manager of the winery. The Thorn-Clarke family has a long history in the Barossa - six generations of involvement in the region's world famous wine industry. The Thorns have been grape growers in the Barossa since the 1870's. David Clarke's passion for the wine industry lead to the planting of the Kabininge vineyard outside of Tanunda in 1987, which represents the start of a deeper involvement by the family in the Barossa wine industry.

The Vineyards
William Randell is sourced from Thorn-Clarke's 33 hectare Kabininge vineyard (81.51 acres) is true Barossa Valley floor terroir. This is the oldest of their 100% family-owned vineyards and is situated in the heart of one of the great wine regions of the world - the Barossa Valley. Kabininge is planted predominantly to Shiraz - the variety for which the Barossa Valley is best known - supported by smaller plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. At just 270 metres above sea level and located on dark grey to dark brown carbonaceous soils (known as Bay of Biscay soil) red winegrapes ripen easily here. By monitoring soil moisture levels to limit yield and berry size, we can achieve exceptional red wines with superb varietal flavor and concentration.

VINTAGE CONDITIONS
2008 was a very warm year with harvest being completed in a very short period. The resultant wines from the vintage reflect the growing conditions with loads of upfront fruit and rich mouthfeel, meaning wines from this vintage will have a great deal of aging potential as well.

WINEMAKING
The grapes are crushed and de-stemmed into open fermenters. Yeast is added immediately and the grape must pumped over twice daily to maximise color, tannin and flavor extraction. Cooling is used to ensure ferment temperatures remain in the 22-25 degrees Celsius range, which allows the fruit to display maximum fruit expression. Pressing occurs approximately
seven days after crushing and the wine is then put into French oak to complete fermentation. All small premium barrels remain separate to ensure the best blend is put together.

BARREL AGING
24 months 100% French oak, 100% new.

COMMENTS
The colour is a deep inky purple. The nose is complex with a deep concentration of black fruits, liquorice and spicy chocolate oak. The palate is full bodied with typically intense Barossa Shiraz fruit. The fruit characters are blackberry and
plum, with well balanced oak. Additionally the palate is dense and generous making it wonderfully mouth-filling and with some lovely grainy tannins, it suggests the wine will improve for the next 10 to 15 years. This wine has fantastic length of fruit and oak flavors.

CELLARING POTENTIAL
10 – 20 years.

Named in honor of a family descendant who built and captained paddle steamers on the River Murray last century, this wine can rightfully claim super-premium status. Excellent quality selection of Barossa fruit. Aging in American and French oak barrels.

"Dense, deep purple-crimson; an enormously concentrated and powerful Shiraz, with so much depth to its black fruits and accompanying tannins it is hard to visualise how long it will take to open up and mature, but the balance if there. Drink to 2030"
- James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion), 95 pts

"Ripe and broad, with a purity of spicy, coffee-accented berry and purple plum flavors that ride over a plush texture and linger on the rich but balanced finish. Best from 2012 through 2018. 1,000 cases made. –HS"
- Wine Spectator (October 15th 2011), 90 pts

2006 Thorn-Clarke, William Randell, Shiraz, Barossa Valley 6/750ml

"Thorn-Clarke makes a luxury bottling, the 2006 William Randell Shiraz. It is a glass-coating opaque purple color with an expressive bouquet of balsam wood, Asian spices, incense, game, blueberry, and licorice. Structured on the palate, it has layers of savory black and blue fruits, good balance, and a lengthy finish. Give it another 4-6 years of bottle age and drink it from 2014 to 2026."

Wine Advocate (Dec. 09), 91+ pts

"Bright, generous and focused, brimming with juicy blackberry, licorice, mint and cream flavors that linger easily as the finish sails on and on. Stylish and graceful. Drink now through 2020.”

2005 Thorn-Clarke, William Randell, Shiraz, Barossa Valley 6/750ml

"Seamless, long and juicy, this vibrant and supple shiraz presents a rare level of freshness and brightness for this Barossa vintage. Scented with violets, blackberries, cassis and sweet new oak, it's generous, finely balanced and mouthfilling, tightly integrated with fine, smooth tannin and refreshing, lively acidity."
- Jeremy Oliver, Australian wine writer and sometimes wine critic for Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

"Saturated ruby. Dark berry liqueur, cocoa powder, tobacco and vanillin oak spices on the nose, plus a subtle graphite undertone. Broad and fleshy, offering sweet and spicy blackberry, cassis and candied licorice flavors, and picking up a cherry-cola quality with air. Becomes brighter and more tannic with air, with the tannins adding shape and structure to the sweet, oak-accented fruit. Very sexy wine, with impressive energy for its size."
- International Wine Cellar (Sept 2008), 92 pts

"There's no mistaking this Barossa Valley wine for anything other than Aussie shiraz: explosive with jammy blackberry and minty flavors leading to a long, rapturous finish. "Fine tannins," taster Nadine Brown wrote, while Slater noted "satisfying flavors and good balance of components." Luskin ignored the tannins and just wrote, "Winner, hands down."
- Washington Post (Nov 2008) - "EXCEPTIONAL"

"Your flagship wine, the William Randell Shiraz is an amazing wine. Buries everything in its path. The 2005 vintage in a blind tasting that we hold at our home every year in Nantucket, Massachusetts at the wine festival, beat many excellent wines including the 2006 Caymus SS. This was the second year in a row that it won easily. You would be well served to set up a table at the Nantucket event in the Spring as your wines will get a ton of visibility, especially the WR. If you are interested, contact Denis Toner who is the founder of the event. Thanks for making fantastic wine. All the best, Mark."
