Heathvale
Eden Valley (Barossa-Australia)

The Estate
Teacher and viticulturist Trevor March owns the estate that lies nestled amongst the big Red Gums and rolling hills above the Barossa Valley. He mostly sells grapes, but hopes to someday produce 5,000 cases of wine yearly. Originally, the property raised grapes and made wine beginning in 1856. For years afterward the property remained dormant. In the future, Heathvale will be growing and producing a wine from Sagrantino (an Italian grape from Perugia that makes red wines of great concentration).  The wines at Heathvale are made by winemaker Ben Radford, the same winemaker who made the 2002 Shotfire Ridge, Barossa Cuvée and the 2002 Shotfire Ridge, Shiraz. The Heathvale philosophy is to produce wines that evoke a sense of place, using the latest viticultural techniques and practices in balance with the local environment.

The Vineyards
Trevor March grows approximately 24 acres of grapes. (The total acreage on the farm is 150 acres: 6.5 acres Shiraz, 6.5 acres Chardonnay, 7.5 acres Cabernet Sauvignon and 3.5 acres Riesling. The higher altitude, cooler climate and ancient soils of Eden Valley blend to create a unique microclimate. Heathvale wines reflect vintage and seasonal variation and are strongly regional in character – rich in flavor, well structured, balanced and elegant.

2004 Heathvale, Shiraz, Eden Valley, Barossa

With a bouquet of intense fruit and flavors of pepper and spice with hints of chocolate, this Shiraz has a luxuriously long and satisfying mouthfeel. It will evolve and reward patient and careful cellaring. Because of the close-knit structure of the Shiraz we recommend decanting and letting the wine breathe for at least an hour to be at its best. Enjoy with spicy, medium-weight game and meat dishes.

"Eden Valley fruit is rarely left to stand on its own, often lending a bit of spice to larger Barossa blends, but this is a single-vineyard bottling from former viticulture teacher Trevor March. It’s savory and supple, with a slightly meaty character, vanilla and spice notes all wrapped around a core of lush raspberry fruit. Drink now–2012."

2004 Heathvale, Cabernet Sauvignon, Eden Valley, Barrosa
The grapes were planted in 1998 - 7.5 acres of Langhorne Creek LC10 & LC12 clones; cane pruned to encourage consistency.
Canopy management is practiced using foilage lift wires.

"Encouraged by the historical suitability of this variety to the region, we are confident of ripening Cabernet sufficiently each year to produce an elegant, full-bodied wine with soft, fine-grained tannins. Bird damage in the past has limited the first commercial release becoming available only after the 2004 vintage."
