Heathvale
Eden
Valley (Barossa-Australia)
The Estate
Teacher and viticulturist Trevor
March owns the estate that lies nestled
amongst the big Red Gums and rolling hills above the
Barossa Valley. He
mostly sells grapes, but hopes to someday produce
5,000 cases of wine yearly.
Originally, the property raised grapes and made
wine beginning in 1856.
For years afterward the property remained
dormant. In the
future, Heathvale will be growing and producing a wine
from Sagrantino (an Italian grape from Perugia that
makes red wines of great concentration).
The wines at Heathvale are made by winemaker
Ben Radford, the same winemaker who made the 2002
Shotfire Ridge, Barossa Cuvée and the 2002 Shotfire
Ridge, Shiraz. The Heathvale
philosophy is to produce wines that evoke a sense of
place, using the latest viticultural techniques and
practices in balance with the local environment.
The Vineyards
Trevor
March grows approximately 24 acres of grapes. (The
total
acreage on the farm is 150 acres: 6.5
acres Shiraz, 6.5 acres Chardonnay, 7.5 acres Cabernet
Sauvignon and 3.5 acres Riesling.
The higher
altitude, cooler climate and ancient soils of Eden
Valley blend to create a unique microclimate.
Heathvale wines reflect vintage and seasonal variation
and are strongly regional in character – rich in
flavor, well structured, balanced and elegant.
