Radford Dale
Eden Valley (Australia)

The Estate
The grapes were previously sold to a very famous producer of world class Eden Valley wines until Ben Radford (Wine Maker) and Gill Radford (Chef) bought the property in 1999. Barossa-born Ben Radford and Burgundian-raised Alex Dale form a wonderfully unique partnership. Modern winemaking and traditional values combine to create one of the finest and rarest gems of the Barossa Valley.

The Vineyard
The Radford Dale Vineyard is nestled high in the Barossa Ranges just off  Flaxmans Valley Road, Eden Valley, South Australia. The vines date back to 1930. Like any 70 year old this vineyard needs lots of love and care. Pruning and picking are done by hand to protect and nurture these fragile old gems. Yields are kept low and every bunch is scrutinized and hand-sorted. Only then are they allowed through to the bag press and whole bunch pressed. The juice is then settled for 3 days racked and inoculated with a European yeast strain and fermented cold for up to 4 weeks. No need to add acid as this Eden Valley Riesling is in perfect balance with a zingy natural acidity.

2008 Radford Dale, Riesling, Eden Valley, 12/750ml
An absolute cracker wine with all the hallmarks of a great Eden Valley Riesling, Lime and Citrus blossom on the nose and palate with a perfectly balanced acid. An exceptional palate length and weight given by the old vines. It is intense and mineral, with the zingy Riesling buzz that is so characteristic of the great wines of this varietal, from Northern Europe or from Australia. It will last for years and years, and go through various stages of the flavor spectrum.

"
Another superb Riesling from the Clare Valley, the 2008 Radford Riesling has an excellent bouquet of spring flowers, lemon blossom, mineral, and a hint of tropical aromas. Crisp, dry and steely on the palate, it is impeccably balanced with a zingy finish. It will evolve for 5-7 years and drink well through 2020 if not longer."

"Pale yellow. Lime, green tea, jasmine and minerals on the nose. Spicy, incisive citrus and green apple flavors gain depth and richness with air, picking up a sweet melon note on the back end. Attractively juicy and fresh, with strong finishing cut and very good clarity. Drinkable now, but I'd let this age for a couple more years."

2006 Radford Dale, Shiraz, Eden Valley, 12/750ml
The wine has been aged in small French (93%) and American (7%) barrels, 40% new. Micro-oxygenated in barrel prior and subsequent to Malo.

"The purple-colored 2006 Shiraz displays a perfume of cigar box, pepper, lavender, smoked meat, and blueberry. Layered on the palate with a sense of elegance, it is dense, savory, structured, and well balanced. Give it 2-3 years of additional bottle age and drink it from 2012 to 2020."

"Opaque purple. Ripe boysenberry and plum aromas are complemented by notes of cola and dark chocolate. Fleshy, smooth and a touch sweet, offering broad dark berry flavors and a kiss of vanilla. A tangy, peppery note adds cut to the nicely persistent and gently sweet finish. For a rich, slightly jammy wine this conveys good energy."

2005 Radford Dale, Shiraz, Eden Valley, 12/750ml
2005 was a hot Summer. This required us to adapt out viticulture accordingly and resulted in smaller than usual yields, ranging from 25 to 35 HL / Ha. Shiraz, however, is one varietal which is quite at home in the heat and naturally very adaptable. Certain vineyards experienced hydric-stress and even shut-down, so well-adapted canopy management and drip irrigation were crucial -not least with Shiraz being naturally vigorous and an early ripener. Bunch and grape sizes were relatively small and free of rot.
The wine has been aged in small French (93%) and American (7%) barrels, 40% new. Micro-oxygenated in barrel prior and subsequent to Malo.
This is a classic, spicy, peppery Shiraz , with layers of firm, ripe tannins and bound with abundant juicy, fruit. Our challenge each vintage is to accomplish balance; not easy in our sunny climate. This Shiraz has power and restraint, backbone and fruit.

“Smooth and round, this vivid wine delivers gorgeous blackberry and plum fruit that's shaded with perfumy floral notes and hints of cardamom and fennel seed, all of it supple and insinuating. Drink now through 2015."

« Inky ruby. Sexy, powerfully scented bouquet of candied dark berries, cherry compote, vanillin oak and mocha. Broad and dense, with sweet blackberry and boysenberry flavors, supple texture and fully absorbed tannins. Forward, sappy and very easy to drink, with no rough edges. But there's plenty of deep fruit here and I suspect that it will hold well. »

"The 2005 Shiraz was aged in French and American oak, 40% new. Purple-colored and intensely fragrant, it offers up notes of toasty oak, wood smoke, meat, pencil lead, and blueberry compote. Smooth-textured, already complex, and ripe, this succulent effort will continue to blossom for several more years. It will be at its best from 2011 to 2020."
