Spinifex
Barossa Valley (Australia)

The Estate
Spinifex was conceived by Magali Gely and Peter Schell in 2001 with the ambition to hand make wines from ultra-select vineyards in the finest terroirs of the Barossa Valley. Magali and Peter, partners in both life and business, have lived in the Barossa since the early 90's and worked with some of the Valley's leading small wine producers. Magali has a family history of wine growing near Montpellier spanning over ten generations, while Peter's ancestors were among the earliest to settle in the Barossa Valley. This gives their union and commitment to premium wine production a sense of history and place. Peter, a trained oenologist, has made wine in Burgundy, Switzerland, Provence, the Minervois, the Languedoc, Bordeaux, New Zealand and Australia. These experiences have been central in forming the belief of the absolute primacy of the vineyard in the production of unique, ultra premium wines, and the requirement for a fastidious approach to vineyard selection based on old vines and distinguished sites.

The Vineyards
Spinifex wines are produced from old vines of 50 to 120 years of age and low yielding Shiraz, Mataro (Mourvèdre), Grenache and Cinsault vineyards in the Barossa and Eden Valleys. The focus of winemaking is to produce harmonious, richly textured wines with complex ripe fruit flavours for which the great wines of the Barossa are renowned. Quantities are extremely limited.

2005 Spinifex
, "Esprit", Barossa Valley 12/750ml
40% Grenache, 34% Shiraz, 12% Cinsault, 8% Mataro, 6% Carignan.
In keeping with the Spinifex approach to hand crafting unique wines, the fruit for this wine was hand-picked from six low yielding Barossa vineyards, fermented in small batches, basket pressed and matured separately for 20 months in a selection of French oak. Strong fruit flavors, structure and balance will allow this wine to improve in the bottle for up to seven years. Only 330 cases produced.

"The 2005 Esprit, a blend of 40% Grenache, 34% Shiraz, with the balance Cinsault, Mataro, and Carignan, was aged for 20 months in French oak. Purple-colored, it exhibits aromas of garrigue, damp earth, blueberry, blackberry, and black cherry. Very Chateauneuf du Pape-like, the wine is full-bodied; smooth textured, and has superb depth and balance. The wine is structured and will benefit from 6-8 years of bottle age. Drink it through 2025."

"Supple and round. A plump mouthful of blackberry, cherry and roasted red pepper flavors that mingle artfully on the lithe texture, echoing beautifully on the long finish. Grenache, Shiraz, Cinsault, Mataro and Carignane. Drink now through 2012."
- Wine Spectator (Aug. 2007), 91 pts

"Ruby-red. Open-knit red and dark berry aromas are deepened by tobacco, minerals and fresh flowers. On the palate, spicy raspberry and blackberry flavors are complicated by bright mineral and baking spice notes. A fresh, firm midweight that's drinking very well now."

2004 Spinifex
, "Esprit", Barossa Valley 12/750ml
"Ruby-red. Flamboyant, pungent nose offers a wild combination of ripe red and dark berry aromas, fresh flowers, pipe tobacco, high-grade chocolate and roasted coffee. On the palate, the red fruit element speaks strongest today, even if the finish takes a darker turn toward blackberry liqueur and blackcurrant. Sweet and lush in texture and nicely framed by fine, well-integrated tannins. Finishes with superb length and concentration and a distinctly sappy impression. This highly successful blend should be given at least a few years of cellaring."
- Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, 92 pts

"The 2004 Esprit, a blend of 36% Grenache, 34% Shiraz, 20% Mourvedre, and 10% Cinsault, is a Cotes du Rhone-like effort offering notes of black cherries, pepper, garrigue, spice box, and earth. Fruit-driven as well as restrained and complex, it should be consumed over the next 3-4 years.

2005 Spinifex, "Indigene", Barossa Valley
6/750ml
64% Mataro and 36% very old vine Shiraz - a classic in the making. Fermentation is by hand with a punch down 3 times per day. Wonderful earthy, wild gamey flavors of the Mataro, blended with very rich ripe fruit flavors of the Shiraz. 600 cases produced.

"The 2005 Indigene is 55% Mataro and 45% Shiraz, the winery’s take on Bandol. Opaque purple-colored, the aromas include scorched earth, forest floor, wild game, blackberry, and blueberry. On the palate the wine’s youth is apparent. There are gobs of fruit and ripe tannin, great intensity and serious depth. Give it 5-7 years of cellaring and drink it through 2030.

"Lithe, vibrant and distinctive for its meaty blueberry and burnt sugar notes that remain supple and refined through the generous finish. Has depth and persistence. Mataro and Shiraz. Best from 2008 through 2015."
- Wine Spectator (Aug. 2007), 92 pts

"Dark ruby. Smoky cherry and cassis aromas are complicated by cured tobacco, olive, black cardamom and a hint of camphor. Creamy dark berry flavors are sweetened by mocha and cinnamon and nicely framed by supple tannins, giving this serious sex appeal. Finishes on a spicy note, with excellent depth and thrust. More structured than the shiraz/viognier blend and in need of even more patience."

"Dense ruby. Explosive bouquet of spiced cherry, plum, blackberry, creme de cassis, roasted coffee and cured meat. Mouthfilling, dense and verging on sweet, but with impressive structure and youthful tannins. Sexy oak spices add sweetness to the finish. A deeply concentrated, weighty wine that's wound-up right now and needs at least three years of cellaring."

"The compelling 2004 Indigene (64% Mourvedre and 36% Shiraz) boasts an inky/purple hue in addition to a fruit cocktail-scented perfume of blue, red, and black fruits intermixed with spice and incense. A wine of great intensity, purity, richness, and full-bodied texture, it will last for 7-8 years."

2004 Spinifex, Grenache
, Barossa Valley 6/750ml
Made from
50 year-old Grenache, this rich and concentrated wine displays ripe blackberry fruits, some dark spices, soft and smooth tannins and a great length..

"Saturated ruby. Primary aromas of dark cherry, crushed blackberry and cured tobacco. Offers explosively sweet black and red fruit flavors, with bright acidity giving focus and extending the fruit. Really pretty, lush and pure in its blackberry expression, with a suave texture and no obvious tannins. Finishes juicy, fresh and quite persistent. This is delicious already but has the concentration to age."

"Spinifex demonstrates a nice touch with Grenache, with the 2004 (from 50-year old vines) exhibiting peppery, kirsch liqueur-like notes, wonderful purity, medium to full body, and abundant spice, earth, and licorice. It should be drunk over the next 4-5 years."

2005 Spinifex, "Shiraz-Viognier", Barossa Valley
6/750ml
95% Shiraz and 5% Viognier
This unusual blend is typical of the Rhône Valley and in particular from the Cote-Rotie area. The Viognier bring freshness and finesse to the powerful and spicy Syrah grapes.
240 cases produced.

"The 2005 Shiraz – Viognier (5%) is a saturated purple. It offers aromas of pain grille, violets, bacon, sausage, black cherry and blueberry in a style reminiscent of Cote-Rotie. Full-bodied, sweet, and dense, this lengthy, structured wine will benefit from extended cellaring and drink well through 2030. It should come as no surprise that one of the partners in this venture has a family history of winegrowing in Montpellier, France spanning over ten generations.

"Bright purple. Explosively perfumed nose offers vibrant blackcurrant, kirsch, blueberry and spicy tobacco scents. Lush and sweet but also bright, with precise raspberry and cassis flavors, medium weight and an expansive, impressively pure back end. Gains depth with air but retains focus and verve. A smoky mocha note lingers on the strikingly persistent finish. I'd hold this for a few years."
- International Wine Cellar (July/Aug 2007), 92 pts

"Smooth and lively, this harmonious wine shows a spicy, floral character to the blackberry and white pepper flavors, finishing with grace. Drink now through 2015."

"Deep violet. This smells like Rhone Valley wine: creme de cassis, blackberry, candied plum, dried flowers, espresso and baking spices. Then bright and racy in the mouth, with noteworthy precision to its tangy dark berry flavors without coming across as hard. Finishes on a sweet blackberry note, with fine-grained tannins sneaking in on the back. Very sexy stuff."

"A blockbuster offering with superb elegance, complexity, nuances, and uplifting aromas is the 2004 Shiraz/Viognier (95% and 5% respectively). This Cote Rotie-styled, dense red possesses loads of fruit as well as complexity. With sensational richness, elegance, and opulence, it will provide immense pleasure over the next 7-8 years."
