Tin Shed Winery
(Australia)

The Estate
Vintners Grill owner and Chef Peter Clarke has been constructing some of the most exciting wines in all of Australia since 1998. It’s a ‘natural’ approach here, with wild yeast fermentation and minimal new oak influence.

The Vineyards
Their wines exhibit deep fruit, rich middles and long flavors.  Tin Shed produces four wines with a production level of 2,500 cases in total.  The wines are a mythical cross between Barossa Valley, Bandol and Côte-Rôtie.

2007 Tin Shed, Riesling, "Wild Bunch", Eden Valley 12/750ml

Hand picked from sixty year old vines in the Eden Valley, whole bunch pressed and naturally fermented, using minimal additions and loads of attention. This has an incredible nose: full, limey and fresh with great balance. The liminess isn’t over powering, and there’s some minerality here too, together with a touch of herbiness. The palate is concentrated and broad with minerally, lemony fruit.

2008 Tin Shed, Shiraz, "Melting Pot", Eden Valley 12/750ml
The Melting Pot was named by one of the ‘Wild Bunch’ after a few drinks and a think tank. It reflects this blend being a ‘Melting Pot’ of flavors derived from an array of different Shiraz vineyards through Eden Valley as well as a few barrels of Mourvedre and Grenache for funk and spice.

Ageing in old barrels for 12 months has allowed the true terroir of a very difficult vintage show how special Eden Valley is. The color is a delicious deep thick purple. The nose has glorious dark heady notes of licorice and black fruits. The palate is warm and smooth with lifted spicy and floral notes after decanting. The length is long and soft with remarkable balance.

"
The purple-colored 2007 Melting Pot Shiraz contains a dollop of Grenache and Mourvedre and was aged in seasoned French oak for 12 months. Spice box, underbrush, licorice, and an assortment of black fruit aromas lead to a medium to full-bodied, savory wine with layered fruit and plenty of tannin. The wine is well-balanced but will benefit from 2-3 years of additional bottle age. This lengthy effort will drink well through 2019."

2005 Tin Shed, Shiraz, "Melting Pot", Eden Valley 12/750ml
Bright and aromatic with lovely fruit characters. The palate is smooth with spice and fruits.

"A stunning offering, the 2005 Shiraz Melting Pot reveals flamboyant aromas of cassis, black pepper, licorice, and espresso roast. This medium to full-bodied, pure, rich Shiraz offers another example of the seamlessness of this vintage."
- Wine Advocate (#167, Oct 2006), 91-94 pts

“Dark, dense and chewy, offering a serious mouthful of cardamom-scented black cherry, beet and black olive character. The distinctive flavor profile and rich texture need time to soften and gain some harmony. Best from 2012 through 2020.”

2004 Tin Shed, "Three Vines MSG", Barossa 12/750ml

MSG stands for Mourvèdre, Syrah, Grenache, produced from 80 year old vines and aged in seasoned hogsheads.

"Ruby-red. Elegant, mineral-laced aromas of cherry, raspberry, plum and flowers, with subtle hints of graphite, iron and cured tobacco. Features loads of sweet, vibrant berry and cherry flavor but this silky, polished midweight also shows a deft touch. Bright fruit is nicely supported by fine-grained tannins and gentle acidity. Finishes on a lingering, juicy note of fresh blackcurrant. Impressive for its balance of brash flavor and suave, even understated texture and weight."
- Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, 92 pts

"The 2004 Three Vines, a blend of old vine Mourvedre, Syrah, and Grenache, exhibits a dense ruby/purple color along with a big nose of tree bark, fresh mushrooms, blueberries, raspberries, Provencal herbs, and garrigue. A complex, 300-liter hogshead-aged, French-styled red, it should drink well for 3-4 years."

2003 Tin Shed, "Three Vines MSG", Barossa 12/750ml

"Zingy, offering a lively mouthful of peppery currant and plum flavors. This is tightly packed with layers of spice and toast around vibrant fruit, which lingers against refined tannins on the juicy finish. Best from 2009 through 2015."
- Wine Spectator (Aug. 2007), 91 pts

“The deep, ruby/purple-hued, perfumed 2003 MSG (40% Mourvedre, 20% Shiraz, 40% Grenache) offers up aromas of coffee beans, black cherries, mocha, chocolate, and dried herbs. This opulent, attractively textured, medium to full-bodied effort can be enjoyed over the next 5-7 years.”

2005 Tin Shed, Shiraz, "Single Wire", Eden Valley 6/750ml
Lovely fruity aromas. The palate is expressive with a good structure and some spiciness on the finish. Beautiful and elegant fruity characters.

"The 2005 Shiraz Single Wire is dense, opulent, and even richer than the Melting Pot with intense flavors, a natural, full-bodied texture, and a 40+-second finish. It should drink well for 10-12 years."

2004 Tin Shed Shiraz, "Single Wire", Eden Valley 6/750ml
"Bright ruby. Dense, brooding, inky nose opens slowly to reveal powerful aromas of candied plum, blackberry, kirsch, tobacco, graphite, black cardamom and musky underbrush. A medium-bodied shiraz with a gentle dryness that puts the sweet fruit into high relief. The very concentrated fruit flavors offer excellent delineation and structure, not to mention length on the palate. I'd call the fruit explosive but it's really more of a slow, silky burn. You could easily pay twice as much for a wine with similar elegance, balance and intensity."

"The 2004 Shiraz Single Wire (tasted from barrel) is outstanding."
- Wine Advocate (#167, Oct 2006), 89-92 pts

“Has density and richness, but manages to focus its supple blackberry, white pepper and clove flavors, weaving a licorice note through the long, expressive finish. Balanced with enough acidity to cut through the richness, this sails through the finish seamlessly. Drink now through 2016.”

"Almost Rhône-ish in its spicy, savory notes and sour plum flavors. It’s meaty and peppery, with sausage-like notes. Only medium-bodied, this is not a typical Barossa heavyweight, but a wine that relies on aromatics and complexity for its charm. Drink now–2012.
