Tröegs Brewing Company
 Harrisburg, Pennsylvania
www.troegs.com

The company
Tröegs Brewing Company was established in 1997 by the brothers Chris and John Trogner, who have been working hard to get Central Pennsylvania on the brewing map. Since 1997, these Mechanicsburg natives have been handcrafting world-class beers that combine traditional English brewing techniques with the eclecticism of new American brewing. But how they reached this point is as compelling as where they are headed.
Today, the brewery produces seven different beers including Hopback Amber Ale, Troegenator Doublebock, Rugged Trail Nut Brown Ale, Tröegs Pale Ale, Oatmeal Stout (seasonal), Sunshine Pils (seasonal), and The Mad Elf (seasonal), and distributes its product in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware and Virginia.

Tröegs, Hopback Amber 24/case

This beer gets its unique name and taste from the HopBack Vessel in our brewhouse.  Packed full of whole flavor hops, each batch circulates through the vessel, creating a fresh hoppy aroma, spicy taste and rich caramel note that defines this signature amber ale.
Deep amber in color under a huge creamy head. The aroma is very apparent, bold and spicy with a slight floral character.  Balanced with caramel malt, this well-rounded amber ale has an up-front floral spice that builds with a flush of sweetness.

HopBack Amber Ale Wins Madness
The "hopback" in the brand name is a vessel through which the beer passes en route from the brew kettle on the hot side of the brewery to the fermenter on the cold side. A sievelike metal basket filled with whole-flower hops is inserted into the hopback before the beer is pumped in. Prolonged contact between beer and hops allows the volatile hop oils to leach into the beer, resulting in a more delicate flavor.
Trogner describes the process as being similar to that for French press coffee, where the coffee grounds come into direct contact with the brew, resulting in a stronger, more flavorful drink.
- Washington Post (April 09)- 2009 Beer Madness

"For sheer drinkability, it's tough to beat Troegs's signature russet brew, made in Harrisburg with quality ingredients, European techniques, and a heaping helping of American creativity. Defying traditional categorization, it's modishly hoppier than your average amber, a stunner with burgers and BBQ."

Tröegs, Troegenator 24/case

The Troegenator Double Bock, is a dark, strong lager (8.2% abv).  It pours into a glass with a bronze to brown color, fluffy white head and bready malt aroma. The Troegenator leaves a rich, warming feeling and subtle spicy flavors. The style, Double Bock, dates back a century or so ago. During periods of fasting without solid foods, the Monastic brewers relied on the double bock; a stronger, richer beer to fulfill their basic nutritional needs. Known to them as "liquid bread", a double bock has a strong malt aroma and chewy rich body.  Traditionally these brewers ended the name of their double bock with the suffix "ator", ex. Celabrator, Illuminator, Subliminator.....   In the spirit of the tradition we give you the Troegenator to provide warmth and richness through the early spring months. A double bock of epic proportions, beware, the Troegenator is deceiving smooth and delicious.

Tröegs, Dead Reckoning, Porter 24/case

"In the 14th Century, Sailors would rely on sheer skill to get from a starting point to a final destination.  They called this Dead Reckoning.  We see our beer the same way.  We know where to begin and know where to go, but there are hundreds of ways to get there."
Dead Reckoning is unfiltered and weighs in at 5.8% abv and 53 IBU’s. It features Pilsner, Caramel, Chocolate and Roasted malts along with Chinook and Vanguard hops. “The outstanding taste and flavor of Dead Reckoning originates in the chocolate and roasted malts,” says John Trogner. “There is a nice hoppiness in the front of the beer, but the rich, smooth mouth feel is what really stands out.”
Food compliments: Roasted or smoked food; barbecue, sausages, roasted meat and blackened fish.

"The best winter brews"

Mad Elf is featured in the December 2008 issue of "Playboy".  It is a very tasteful picture of the Mad Elf.
Download article

"For a digestif, try Mad Elf Ale from Troegs Brewing Co. in Harrisburg, Pa. At 11 percent alcohol by volume, it is more than twice as potent as a standard American lager, but it avoids the raw-alcohol roughness that mars many strong beers. A Belgian yeast strain and the addition of honey and cherries give the beer a spicy aroma, a ruddy amber color and a smooth, lingering sweetness with a hint of tart fruit.
Mad Elf is one of the few winter seasonals with overt Christmas imagery on the label. Does the elfin figure in red-and-white fur give a dated feel after Dec. 25? "I don't think it's ever lasted that long," answers co-owner Chris Trogner."

BRONZE MEDAL in the German-Style Pilsner Category
- 2009 Great American Beer Festival

The Brewers Association (BA) World Beer Cup© 2008, a global beer competition that evaluates beers recognizes the most outstanding beers being produced in the world.
Sunshine Pils was awarded a bronze medal in the German-Style Pilsener category. Sunshine Pils was introduced in 2001 as Troegs Summer Beer and became our Summer Seasonal the following year.
“It’s a privilege to win two medals, especially in categories that attract so many European breweries with generations of brewing tradition,” said John Trogner.

Tröegs, Flying Mouflan 12/case
Originally brewed as part of the Scratch Beer Series, the Flying Mouflan is the first beer to come out of the one-off series to become part of the brewery’s roster of production brews. It will be unveiled at numerous events during Philly Beer Week, March 6-15.

“The Scratch Series has given us a chance to incubate new beers that might one day be part of our production line-up,” said Chris Trogner. “The Flying Mouflan was originally brewed as Scratch #4 in 2007. After it won a bronze medal at the 2008 Great American Beer Festival John and I felt it was important to release this beer. The Flying Mouflan is the first release in what will become a line of 22-ounce seasonal brews.”

Dubbed the Flying Mouflan (for reasons that become clearer toward the bottom of the glass) this strong alluring ale is two beers in one. Cracking open a fresh bottle unleashes hops and heat with more than 100 IBUs emanating from three hop varieties and sweet burn of 9.3% ABV. Cellaring the Flying Mouflan in a cool dark place at 50 degrees for a minimum of four months will mellow out the hops and wash away the heat. If you can resist temptation you will be rewarded with two memorable beers in a single bottle.

“We classify this beer as pushing Nugget Nectar off the side of a cliff,” said John Trogner. “It is bold and intense–think hops dipped in candied sugar and rolled in dark chocolate nibs. Over time, the Flying Mouflan transforms into lush raisin and chocolate overtones as the hops subside and the rich barley flavors come out in the beer.”

Tröegs, JavaHead 24/12oz

JavaHead Stout contains a blend of locally roasted espresso and Kenyan coffee beans by St. Thomas Roasters in Linglestown, PA.
JavaHead's recipe is based off of Troegs' original oatmeal stout. After the boil, the hot wort passes through the hopback vessel on its way to fermentation. Packed full of whole leaf hops and a bed of ground coffee beans, the hopback vessel is similar to using a huge French press, intensifying the coffee nose and releasing subtle hints of coffee flavor. The result is a lush oatmeal mouthfeel balanced with cocoa, roast and subtle coffee flavors.
