Domaine Chavy-Chouet
Bourgogne

The Estate
Hubert Chavy-Chouet is a handsome, agile and disarmingly charming individual with a reputation of being quite the ladies' man.  He might even point out the fact that he closely resembles Bruce Willis, and why not flatter him by agreeing. The day we visited, in January 2006, it was cold and very wintry, and the winery and house, in the middle of Meursault, were covered with a thick layer of new snow.  Hubert was dressed rather punkish-like with zippered jeans, shaved head and two earrings in one ear, with his faithful English Bulldog at his side. Always the joker, he pretended to slip in the snow and nearly drop the bottles of wine he was bringing up from his cellar beneath his house.
Hubert Chavy-Chouet is the seventh generation to make wine in his family. He began his winery in 1982 and his son and daughter are hoping to carry on the family tradition. Chavy-Chouet  is one of the oldest families in Puligny-Montrachet. The Ropiteau family (on his mother's side) is the oldest one in Meursault.

The Vineyard
This is an 11 hectare-domaine (27.17 acres) that produces wine from 15 A.O.C.'s (80% White, 20% Red). The vineyard is divided into 70 parcels planted to vines that are 40 years old or more. He uses Gillet as his cooper, who blends oak from Nevers, Limousin and Allier forests. The barrels receive medium toast.  Hubert does not fine or filter his wines, as he prefers their purity to shine through.

An enticing nose of sweet, ripe red fruits. On the palate there is good fruit, strawberries and raspberries, with a hint of smoky oak. A lusciousness in the mouth with a balancing zippiness make this a great food wine.

Chavy-Chouet, Meursault, "Genevrieres" 12/750ml
The Genevrières parcels are located in the heart of Meursault's southern premiers crus. "Genevrieres" takes its name from the presence, years ago, of the juniper bushes which covered its slope, and it is sometimes said that the tang of this aromatic berry can be detected in the wine.
Fruity flavors and typical nutty nuances.

Chavy-Chouet, Meursault, "Casse Têtes" 12/750ml
100% Chardonnay grown on mineral soil in a very stony vineyard.
"Casse
Têtes" means "head breaker". If you fall you would break your head on the heavy stones, hence the vineyard name.
Mineral and salty notes on the nose. Richer on the palate but with a steeliness that always shines through. Citrus fruits, a buttery softness and a touch of pain grille add complexity. A lovely long finish rounds this wine off well.
