Château de Ségriès
Côtes du Rhône - Lirac -Tavel (Rhône Valley)

The Estate
In 1994, Henri de Lanzac, cousin of Christophe Delorme from Domaine de la Mordorée, purchased the Domaine and began to improve the quality of the wine. "Ségriès" in provencal means "water spring". This family owned and operated winery is located in Lirac and produces some of the best values in my portfolio. They produce the following A.O.C. wines:
          * Tavel Rosé
          * Côtes du Rhône Rouge
          *
Lirac Rouge
          * Lirac Blanc
" An old Lirac estate with recent signs of revival under the new owners; the reds are medium weight, good to drink inside six years; charming Tavel." - Anthony Dias Blue's pocket guide to wine 2006

"A super value treasure trove in the southern Rhone, Ségriès is a large estate of 109 acres brought back to life over the last decade by Henri de Lanzac. The wines continue to go from strength to strength."- Wine Advocate (#178, Aug. 2008)

"Over the last fifteen years, this property has been transformed into one of the better value producers in the Cotes du Rhone. The old, oxidized, vegetal offerings have been replaced with classic examples of Provencal wines that are fresh and fruity with ripe tannins."
- Wine Advocate (#190, Aug. 2010)

"The new releases from proprietor Henri de Lanzac are all impressive."

The Vineyard
The Domaine Château de Ségriès owns 44.5 hectares of vineyard land (108.91 acres), all in old vines, 30 hectares in one piece alone:
- 7 ha (17.30 acres) in Tavel, on limestone, pebble stone, sand and clay based soils.
- 30 ha (74.10 acres) in Lirac, on clay and limestone based soils.
- 4 ha (9.88 acres) in
Côtes du Rhône.
- 3.5 other ha (8.65 acres) in Côtes du Rhône for the "Clos de l'Hermitage"

Many of the vines date back to 1925, and were planted by the former owner Count de Regis de Gatimel.

"An absolutely brilliant dry rose, and an unexpected value, especially from the prestigious rose village of Tavel, is the 2010 Tavel Rose, a blend of 50% Grenache, 30% Cinsault and the rest Clairette and Syrah. The wine displays plenty of raspberry and strawberry fruit, super aromatics that engulf the taster, and a medium-bodied, zesty yet authoritatively flavored mouthfeel. Drink it over the next year. The color is a light, vibrant pink. The new releases from proprietor Henri de Lanzac are all impressive."

Manual harvest.
50% Grenache, 30% Syrah, 10% Cinsault, 5% Mourvèdre, 5% Carignan.
Deep blueberry and forest aromas precede the very long flavors of black cherry, bramble and black pepper. Muscular and packed, it finishes with drying tannins. A great value.

"Full bodied and heavily extracted, this is a dark, plummy wine with almost chewy tannins on the finish. Yet the aromas remain fresh and floral, nicely accented by coffee and spice. Drink now–2017 - J.C."
- Wine Enthusiast (October 2011), 90 pts

"More serious, structured, and meaty (than the CDR) is the 2009 Lirac Cuvee Reservee. Fifty percent Grenache, 30% Syrah and the rest Cinsault, Mourvedre and Carignan, this has more earthy, foresty notes, an opaque ruby/purple color, hints of incense, blue and black fruits, medium body and light to moderate tannin in the finish. It is just becoming drinkable yet should age reasonably well for 5-7 years. The new releases from proprietor Henri de Lanzac are all impressive."

"This ripe red shows a slightly raisined edge to its linzer torte, plum sauce and crushed cherry fruit. Licorice and spice notes mark the lightly firm finish. Drink now through 2012. 3,500 cases made. –JM"

"
The quality (and price) rises slightly with the 2008 Lirac Cuvee Reservee. A blend of 50% Grenache, 30% Cinsault, and the rest Mourvedre and Carignan, its evolved dark plum/garnet color is already revealing a slight lightening at the edge. The bouquet reveals aromas of raspberries, underbrush, tobacco leaf, lavender, and spice. This medium-bodied 2008 is best drunk over the next 2-3 years."

2007 Château de Ségriès, Lirac Rouge, Cuvée Réservée 12/750ml
"A brilliant red wine which requires another 6-12 months of bottle age. A combination of 50% Grenache, 30% Syrah, and the rest Cinsault, Mourvèdre, and Carignan, it exhibits a dense ruby/purple hue as well as a big, bold aromatic display of fresh mushrooms, tree bark, blueberries and black cherries. Deep textured, full-bodied, powerful, and muscular with some tannin to shed, this offering should be forgotten for a year or so, and consumed over the following decade."

Château de Segries La Dame Blanc de Blancs 12/500ml
Very unique wine that is produced in exceptional vintages.
The grapes are harvested later in the season, around the end of October, which gives the wine its specific characteristics. The grapes are picked when they are fully ripe and affected by noble rot and famous Botrytis Cinerea, resulting in a higher concentration and sugar level, and producing very specific wines that are particularly well balanced, mineral, with residual sugar.

2009 Côtes du Rhône Rouge, Clos de l'Hermitage 6/750 ml
Yield:  40 hl/ha / Age of the vines:  40 years.
This 3.5 hectare vineyard, located in the famous “Quartier de la Chartreuse de Villeneuve-les-Avignon”,  has been owned by the Formula 1 race car driver Jean Alesi since 1995. It is managed by Château de Ségriès
The wine is made of 1/3 each of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre.
Vinification: 21 days skin maceration in temperature controlled concrete vats, 9 months oak aging -5% new French oak from Seguin Moreau cooper and 95% of 1 year old barrels.

"Although expensive, one of the top wines of the Cotes du Rhone appellation is the 2009 Clos de l’Hermitage. A wine that consistently over-delivers, this stunningly concentrated wine, made from equal parts Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre aged nine months in oak barrels, has a dense ruby/purple color and a big, sweet kiss of black truffle, blackberry, cassis, licorice, and subtle barbecue smoke. Even a note of graphite seems to make an appearance in this wine, which comes close to being internationally styled but holds back as its Provencal typicity of spice box, herbs, lavender and kirsch emerges. This full-bodied beauty is powerful, rich, and capable of lasting a decade or more. Wines from this well-known estate of nearly 110 acres continue to go from strength to strength. The new releases from proprietor Henri de Lanzac are all impressive"
- Wine Advocate (June 30th 2011), 93 pts

This is very pumped up, with overt mocha and blueberry aromatics that overwhelm the dark plum and blackberry fruit. Heavily toasty through the finish. Ambitious and will have some fans, but a bit overdone in the end. Drink now through 2012. 900 cases made. –JM

"
Segries’ luxury cuvee, the 2008 Cotes du Rhone Clos de l’Hermitage, which they have made for Formula One race car driver Jean Alesi since 1995, is an equal part blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre aged in a combination of new and old French oak barrels. Typically a very big wine, the 2008 is less powerful than the 2007 and 2005, and probably the 2009. Nevertheless, it is an outstanding effort exhibiting dense blackberry and raspberry fruit notes intermixed with notions of licorice, spice box, earth, roasted herbs, and jus de viande. It should drink nicely for 5-7 years."

2007 Côtes du Rhône Rouge, Clos de l'Hermitage 6/750 ml
"A remarkable wine, and even at $30 a bottle, it represents a fabulous bargain. Made from 40-year-old vines, it is an equal part blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre. Its opaque purple color is followed by a bouquet that smells more like a Côte Rôtie than a Côtes du Rhône. Flowery notes intermixed with tapenade, group pepper, roasted meats, and a copious black cherry and blackberry fruit soar from the glass. The wine possesses fabulous density, a rich, full-bodied style, and present but sweet tannin. It should drink gorgeously for 10-12 years, perhaps longer. "
