Burgo Viejo
Rioja (Spain)

The Estate
Six families of farmers founded Bodegas Burgo Viejo in 1987 (with the next generation coming onboard, it is now sixteen families working together). Burgo Viejo´s main asset has always been the exquisite winemaking process of grapes collected from its own vineyards throughout the years, back to the times when they were just a wine cellar selling in bulk (they started as a cooperative in the 1950’s). Burgo Viejo wines are exported to Japan, China, Denmark, UK, Belgium and the U.S. (export markets represent 5-10% of the production).  Young Gorka Etxebarria is the leading winemaker and has been working with Burgo Viejo since December 2003.

The Vineyards
The vineyards measure 200 hectares – 494 acres – (90% tinto, 5% rosado, 5% blanco) and spread throughout the municipality of Alfaro, La Rioja, Spain at the foothills of Yerga Mountain, on the banks of the fertile Ebro Valley. This area offers a huge diversity of soils and microclimates where the grape varietals, Tempranillo, Mazuelo, Garnacha, Carignan, Graciano and Viura grow to become Burgo Viejo wines.
Most of the vines are 30 years old. Some Garnacha are over 90 years old and some young organic Graciano have been planted. The types of oak used are 90% American and 10% French.

"
Licorice, fig and chocolate notes frame sweet plum and black cherry flavors in this generous red. The tannins are full but gentle, and lively acidity keeps it all fresh. Drink now through 2014. 3,000 cases made."

"
Deep ruby. Seductive, fragrant aromas of cherry-vanilla and dark berry preserves, with slow-building smokiness. Juicy dark fruit flavors are nicely braced by zesty acidity, with a touch of camphor emerging on the back. Finishes with seductive sweetness, very good persistence and a repeating vanilla note. I'd serve this with a spicy, grilled hunk of lamb."

"Bright ruby. Cherry-vanilla and cassis on the nose, with oak spice and anise notes adding complexity. Juicy, broad and supple, with very good depth to its cherry compote and dark berry flavors. The vanilla note returns on the finish, which is sweet, smooth and long. This is delicious and fully mature."

2010 Burgo Viejo, Palacio de Verano, Rioja 12/750ml
85% Tempranillo, 10% Garnacha & 5% Carignan.

Palacio de Verano Tinto blends the concept of the intensely fruity young wines traditionally made in Rioja and the concept of the Crianzas that made this region world-famous. The result is a complex wine that impresses for its intensity right from the moment it is poured in the glass.
Palacio de Verano has an intense cherry color, the taste is ripe and fruity, with raspberry, violet, spice and cocoa aromas. Velvety, fresh and long lasting taste in the mouth.

"The 2010 Palacio de Verano is 100% Tempranillo displaying plenty of spice notes, savory black fruit flavors, and a medium-long finish. Drink this very good value over the next 4 years."
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (Jay Miller, June 2011), 87 pts

"Bright ruby. Red and dark berry aromas show an appealing, straightforward jammy quality. Juicy and open-knit, with modest depth but decent energy to the bitter cherry and raspberry flavors. The brisk finish features a lingering bitterness; this would be good slightly chilled."
