Ébano
 Ribera del Duero (Spain)

The Estate
Over the past few years Adegas Valmiñor (D.O. Rías Baixas) has been putting together a D.O. Ribera del Duero, initiative which began with the acquisition of prime vineyards in the area around Quintana del Pidio and Gumiel del Mercado. After extensive work on the vineyards and the construction of the necessary facilities, the first Ebano (crianza 2001) was produced. In Spanish, the word ébano means ebony, the hard black wood used in making musical instruments such as clarinets. The name evokes the deep dark color of the wine.

Fenavin Wine Fair, May 2005

The Vineyards
The holdings amount to a total of 43 hectares (106 acres), separated in 7 different parcels. The vines are 100% Tempranillo. The older plantings (23 years) are pruned in the traditional goblet or head-trained fashion. Later plantings are trained on wires and are some 15 years old. The soils in the area are generally a mix of sand/gravel and clay/limestone.

"Aromas of beeswax candle, vanilla pod and chocolate strawberries with a supple dryish medium-full body and a long, tangy, and meaty nut, straw and herb bread accented finish. A delicious and structured Ribera that will work well with lamb"

"Vivid ruby. Complex, expressive aromas of cherry, bitter chocolate, Indian spices, mocha and sexy oak. Lively and penetrating, with very good clarity and verve to its bitter cherry and dark berry flavors. Finishes spicy and long, with firm, fine-grained tannins adding shape and grip. I suspect that this wine will age slowly, on its balance."

"Ebano’s 2006 Crianza is 100% Tempranillo aged for 13 months in French oak. Wood smoke, violets, spice box, and blackberry aromas compose the nose of this structured, savory, slightly tight red. Another 2-3 years of cellaring may fill it out and cause my rating to appear stingy."

"The garnet-colored 2005 Crianza was aged for 13 months in French oak. It offers up a primary nose of cedar, mineral, leather, and blackberry. On the palate the wine is firm, medium-bodied and flavorful with notes of smoky blueberry and licorice making an appearance. This finish is medium-long and pure. Give this solid effort another 1-2 years of bottle age and drink it from 2011 to 2020."

"Ruby-red. Seductively perfumed, sexy bouquet of red and dark berries, cherry and baking spices. Smoky minerals gain strength with air and carry onto the palate, adding structure to the deep, sweet raspberry and cassis flavors. A candied rose note lingers on the finish, which also features subtle vanilla and cola qualities. Pretty open-knit today, but has the concentration to warrant a few more years in the cellar."

"Ruby-red. Spiced plum, kirsch, cassis and graphite on the nose, with subtle clove and cinnamon accents. Crisp, focused and pure, with lively red and dark berry flavors complemented by deeper notes of licorice and mocha. This is impressively balanced, with very good concentration and thrust on the finish, along with a lingering mineral tone."

"Dark ruby opaque color with a concentrated, ripe nose of vanilla and red and black currant. Attacks softly with nice black cherry and wood spice flavors Somewhat light on the mid-palate but finishes with ripe, soft tannins."

"The 2007 Ebano 6 is 100% Tempranillo aged 4 months in French oak. Dark ruby red in color, it displays a pleasant bouquet of cedar, spice box, violets, black cherry, and blackberry. Medium- to full-bodied on the palate with savory flavors and plenty of spice, this racy, vibrant Tempranillo has enough structure to drink well over the next 5-6 years and is a very good value."
- Wine Advocate (April 2010), 87 pts

"
Dark ruby. Musky cherry and herbs on the nose, along with a hint of underbrush. Bitter red berry and cherry flavors are braced by gentle acidity. The tight finish shows decent persistence and an echo of bitter cherry skin."

"Medium red. Spicy redcurrant and cherry on the nose, with suave floral and mineral qualities adding interest. Bitter cherry and sweet dark berry preserve flavors are firmed by tangy minerality, which adds lift to the brisk, focused, red-fruity finish."
