2011 Palacio de Fefiñanes,
Albariño 12/750ml
Fresh fruit aromas of apricot and peach slices with notes of
lemon and green apple. Pretty notes of honey and wet nutmeg,
and the mouth is round, clean, and pleasant with baked apple,
honey, and lemon.
This is a classic Albariño which is good young,
but actually improves over two to three years and remains
quite drinkable for up to five years. Owner Juan Gil comments
that the wine really starts to come into its own in June/July,
and he actually prefers it 18 or more months after it's made.
A Fefiñanes "vertical" of three or four vintages can provide
some most interesting surprises.

2010 Palacio de Fefiñanes,
Albariño 12/750ml
"Light gold.
Ripe pear, melon and tangerine aromas, with an exotic floral
quality. Pliant and creamy, with ripe pear and honeydew
flavors, gentle acidity (by Albariño standards) and slight
warmth. Finishes smooth and fruity, with a hint of spiciness.
In the context of this usually excellent producer I found this
bottling slightly disappointing." -

"Pale golden straw
color. Aromas of cashew butter, nectarine skin and chive
muffin with a dryish medium body and a crisp, long green
apple, lime and grass accented finish. A very nice, dry and
stylish white that will shine at the table." -

"This summer was one of the mildest on record in San Diego.
Does this mean I relaxed my enjoyment of blancos and rosados?
Not hardly. Actually, it was just the opposite. I have enjoyed
some of the best wines of the past couple of years over the
past few months. Among one of my all-time favorites was the
2009 Palacio de Fefiñanes. Having tasted quite a significant
number of Albariños over the years but must admit that this
wine has ranked amongst my all-time top two.
Owned by Spanish wine demi-God, Juan Gil,
Bodega Palacio de Fefiñanes was founded in 1904 and became
firmly established as a leading producer with the bottling and
labeling of its first Palacio de Fefiñanes, (registered as a
trademark in 1928). Incidentally, the bodega was the first
producer to bottle wine under the D.O. Rias Baixas. Juan Gil
notes, “Our wines speak clearly of their landscape, their soil,
with the fullness of a singular variety: the Albariño grape,
as powerful and evocative as it is scarce.”
The 2009 Palacio de Fefiñanes is a truly incredible wine.
Light gold in color with beautifully full and rich aromas of
fresh stone fruits, particularly peaches, apricots, and
nectarines. Additionally, notes of apples and honey exude from
the glass. On the palate similar fruits pass elegantly over
the tongue with abounding freshness and minerality. A long and
persistent finish – with a slight bitterness on the back of
the tongue – complete the experience. Repeat again and again.
I was extremely impressed with this wine and was sorry that I
only had one to enjoy. By the by, I enjoyed this wine with
padrón peppers and heirloom tomatoes.
This is clearly the best white wine I enjoyed this summer. It
is definitely worth seeking out and enjoying alone or with
friends. Seafood, roasted vegetables, and pasta are all worthy
fare for this wine. Seek this wine out, and go one better than
me – buy at least two bottles!"

"This
light gold wine offers an attractive nose of baking spices,
mineral, and lemon-lime. Straightforward on the palate with
good flavors and moderate length, it will drink well over the
next two years."

"Light
gold. Musky pear and quinine aromas become richer with air,
taking a turn to melon and yellow plum. Sappy orchard fruit
flavors are braced by dusty minerals, which add a pleasantly
bitter bite to the back end. Finishes with very good
persistence and a strong echo of lemon zest. Boasts a good
balance of energy and depth. "

"Bodegas del Palacio is said to have produced the first Albarino in 1904. This bottling is considered by some to be an
icon of the region. Elegant and rich aromas with a lifted
perfume. Chalky citrus with hints of pear and apricot, with
mineral and lemon peel on the finish."
