Adegas Valmiñor
Rias Baixas - Ribera del Duero (Spain)

The Estate
One of the newcomers, Adegas Valmiñor was founded in 1997 and is  based in Rosal and boasts a new, ultramodern winery that makes some 200,000 bottles per year of 100% Albariño "Valmiñor". (Note: “Adegas” means “bodegas” [winery] in the local Galician dialect). Owner, Carlos Gomez, produces about 15,000 to 17,000 cases of pure Albariño wine per year.

The Vineyards
Adegas Valmiñor uses purchased fruit from two prime growing areas. Their current vineyard sources are 40% Cambados and 60% Arbo fruit (a unique micro-climate that is a touch warmer than other areas). The Cambados region is located on the coast and provides acidity and freshness to the wine. Together the two fruit sources make a superb blend. Valmiñor means minor valley and today Valmiñor has built a new winery in Rosal.

2006 Valminor, Albariño 12/750ml
A brilliant and lively yellow color. On the nose, the wine shows a great complexity marked by intense fruity aromas of fresh grapefruit, apricot and melon. In the mouth, Valmiñor combines fruity flavors and freshness with a rounded acidity, resulting in a balanced wine that boasts an opulent taste with elegant aromas.

"Bright lemon yellow color. Displays a honeyed nose of pear and melon. Brisk, with bold acidity on the attack accompanied by a dash of petillance and zest. Stony minerality and lemon-citrus flavors dominate. Long, very dry finish. Great wine for shrimp sautéed with garlic and lemon zest." - International Wine Review (Jan. 2008), 89 pts

"This is a killer wine for summer at a great price with--finally--a closure that will do justice to the wine now and for another year or longer.  The fruit is nicely perfumed with scents of white flowers and shows a vivid peach profile on the palate, with real roundness and substance but also plenty of linear thrust into a persistent finish that is freshened by zesty acidity.  US importer Fran Kysela badgered Valmiñor to send his allotment of the wine under a screw cap closure, and the bottle that I tasted in the USA was actually fresher than one tasted in Rias Baixas (just five days previously) despite having been shipped for thousands of miles."

"Greenish straw. Melon, peach and ripe pear on the nose, with zesty mineral, ginger and quinine accents. Round and silky, with light body and supple orchard and citrus flavors supported by gentle acidity. Less energetic than the excellent 2005 but plenty refreshing and easy to drink."

2005 Valminor, Albariño 12/750ml

"A good value in Albarino, the 2005 Valminor is medium straw in color with crisp, refreshing pit fruit flavors, good balance, and decent length. Drink it over the next 1-2 years. Drink 2007-2009. Imported by Kysela Père et Fils, LTD." - Wine Advocate (issue 169), 87 pts

"Lamentably, the days of $10 Albariño are possibly gone forever, due to the combined effects of increasing global demand for these wines, constrained supply of grapes, and unfavorable exchange rates that show no sign of shifting appreciably. Nevertheless, fine Albariño is one of the world's best white wines, and the fact remains that one can still find truly delicious renditions priced under $20. This wine offers medium-bodied fruit recalling peaches and ripe golden apples, and zesty acidity rides alongside these flavors through a long, balanced finish."

"Bright straw. Brisk, stony aromas of green apple, pear and Meyer lemon, with a hint of mineral salts. Fresh and lively, the citrus flavors ripe and focused and the acidity rather gentle. Finishes supple and reasonably persistent."
- Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Sep/Oct 2006), 87 pts

"A bit zesty to start, with a touch of mineral on the nose. Flavorwise, we're talking apple, peach and nectarine. A solid wine with good balance and nothing out or the ordinary." - Wine Enthusiast (Sept. 2006), 87 pts
