2004 Valsacro, Crianza, Rioja 6/750ml
"Tender
and expressive, this red offers black raspberry, boysenberry,
cocoa and tobacco flavors, generous on the palate, but with
gentle tannins. Not muscular, but intriguing and harmonious.
Drink now through 2011."
- Wine Spectator, 90 pts
"The
2004 Crianza is a blend of Garnacha, Tempranillo, and Mazuelo.
Dark crimson in color, the nose reveals lots of spice,
mineral, black raspberry, and black cherry. On the palate this
Rioja is layered and rich with enough silky tannin to evolve
for several years. Spicy, satisfying, and lengthy, this is a
wine to enjoy now and over the next 8-10 years."

2001 Valsacro, Crianza, Rioja 6/750ml
The first
Valscaro hit the streets in 1997 and was major success at home
and abroad. Since then the project has moved along to include
a new 70 hectare plot at Pradejón, with a new large modern
winery now operational, but still under construction and new
plantings destined for Valsacro in 10-15 years. The site was
carefully selected for planting low production Tempranillo
clones on very poor rocky soil, which in time would
self-regulate to the very low yields needed for the high end
Valsacro line. The new winery includes a special grape
selection setup along with the latest in modern winemaking
technology and some interesting innovations like an overhead
crane system to transport must in large vats
to avoid damage from pumps. The approach also brings in
a new "dump over" [rather than pump over] technique
which has been a major success.
" Alluring aromas of blackberry and spice give way to
blackberry, cola, toast and mineral flavors on a plush
texture, with well-integrated tannins and succulent acidity. A
modern style, with lots of oak, but enough fruit for balance.
Drink now through 2011."
- Wine Spectator (Dec. 15, 2006), 91 pts
"The
Valsacro Riojas are first-class efforts. The 2001 Crianza,
from an outstanding vintage, is a blend of Garnacha,
Tempranillo and Mazuelo aged for 12 months in French and
American oak. Made in a modern style, the wine is dark ruby in
color with attractive aromas of cedar, black cherry, and
licorice. It is medium-bodied, structured, and in need of time
to blossom but the depth and purity of fruit suggest that
patience will be rewarded. Imported
by Kysela Pčre et Fils, LTD."
- Wine Advocate (issue 169), 90 pts
"Ruby-red.
Deeply spicy, pungent aromas of sweet red and dark berries
complemented by toasty oak, dried flowers, cigar box and
coffee. Lush, supple and weighty with vibrancy to its cherry
and blackcurrant tones, and focus from its supple tannins.
Finishes sweet and long, with a lingering note of cherry
liqueur." - Stephen Tanzer's International

2004 Valsacro, Dioro, Rioja 6/750ml
The latest
step in the project is Valsacro Dioro. The earlier
Valsacros were made from a field selection of the older
vineyards. Now, thanks to the new facility Amador has been
able to build an upmarket version of Valsacro with a
four-stage selection process that includes an initial field
selection of the fruit followed by a second table selection as
the grapes come into the winery. After fermentation wine from
selected tanks is transferred to new French oak barrels for
12-14 months of barrel age. Finally, the best barrels are set
aside for Dioro and the remainder used to "upgrade"
the normal Valsacro.
"The
2004 Dioro is composed of 40% Tempranillo, 40% Garnacha, 10%
Graciano, and, surprise, surprise, 10% Macabeo, a white grape.
The wine is a barrel selection aged for 12-14 months in new
French oak. Valsacro’s rendition of Cote-Rotie works just
fine. Purple in color, the wine is fragrant with notes of
spice box, flowers, blueberry, and assorted black fruits.
Smooth-textured, ripe, and lengthy, this is a hedonistic
effort to drink over the next 6-8 years."
- Wine Advocate (Issue 175, Feb 08, 92 pts
"Deep
ruby. Smoky cherry and blackcurrant on the nose, with exotic
oak spice and musky underbrush adding complexity. Suave,
creamy red fruit flavors possess impressive depth and are
supported by well-judged tannins. Gains sweetness and breadth
with air but keeps its shape, finishing with a sexy candied
licorice quality."
- International Wine Cellar (Sep/Oct 2007), 91 pts
"This winery located just outside the Rioja DO
boundaries produces both DO and Table Wines [Vino de Mesa].
From an excellent vintage, the 2004 Dioro is a blend of 40
percent Tempranillo, 40 percent Garnacha and 10 percent
Graciano. Aged in new French oak for 12-14 months, it displays
a dark ruby color with dark smoky plum aromas and a touch of
sandalwood. Lush and ripe, it has a very soft attack, light
mid-palate, and a flavorful, fruity long finish."

2003 Valsacro, Dioro, Rioja 6/750ml
"The 2003 Dioro is a selection of the best barrels aged
12-14 months in new French oak. Purple in color with the nose
exhibiting the barrique influence (lots of spice box and
cedar) as well as black currants and cherry, this full-bodied
effort has layers of sweet fruit, richness, and supple tannin.
Give it 2-4 years to evolve and drink it for 8-10 years
thereafter.
Drink
2009-2019. Imported by Kysela Pčre et Fils, LTD."

2002 Valsacro, Dioro, Rioja 6/750ml
"This modern red shows dark color and plush texture with
ripe, well-integrated tannins, plenty of toasty oak and just
enough ripe plum and blackberry fruit to keep it balanced.
Drink now through 2009. 2,000 cases made."
- T.M, Wine Spectator (Sept. 30, 2006), 89 pts
"The
2002 D’Ioro Seleccion Kysela, which spent 12-14 months in
French oak, is a strong effort for this troublesome vintage.
Its dense ruby/purple color is accompanied by a rich,
sumptuous nose of cigar tobacco interwoven with black
currants, cherries, earth, and spice box. Medium to
full-bodied, with wonderful sweetness, supple tannin, and
decent acidity, it should be consumed over the next 5-7 years
given the vintage’s fragile fruit.”

"Also,
medium ruby in color. More complicated than the 2005 with a
bouquet of sweet, ripe plum and strawberry in a light vanilla
veneer. Sweet oak and medium plum flavors show on
palate."

2005 Razón, Tinto, Table Wine 12/750ml
Made from old vines Garnacha grapes (70+ years old), grown
just outside the official Rioja denomination. The extra-ripe
grapes were left on the vines after the main harvest, and then
harvested by hand after they were partially dehydrated. The
carefully selected grapes were then fermented on the skins for
about three/four weeks, after which time they were racked into
a mix of American and French oak for 6 months ageing before
being bottled.
Great wine and a superb value.
