  • Week of 8/3/15 - Ayni Malbec

ayni malbec nv bottleThis week's feature is a highly-rated, super premium selection from Argentina's Chakana Winery - their icon wine, Ayni Malbec.

Chakana describes Ayni as "the result of our permanent quest for the best Malbec terroirs that Mendoza can offer." It is 100% Malbec, harvested by hand, aged for 12 months in new French oak.

Wine Spectator recently gave the current 2013 vintage 92 points, calling it "suave, rich and well-spiced, offering loads of dark plum, currant and dried blackberry flavors. Molten chocolate notes emerge mid-palate, with Asian spice accents. Presents a long and ripe finish, accented by loamy details."

Tim Atkin also featured the wine in his 2015 Special Argentine Report, giving it 94 pts and assuring us that it'll be good for years to come!
"Ayni is the top Malbec at Chakana and more than delivers on that status in 2013. It's still a young wine, with lots of gas in the tank, as it were, but this is a classic Uco style with freshness underpinning savoury black fruits, plenty of color and understated oak. Drink: 2016-22"
