Quilceda Creek Vintners
Washington State

The Estate
The winery was founded in 1978 and is dedicated exclusively to produce world-class Washington State Cabernet Sauvignon.

“Alex Golitzin, nephew of famed enologist André Tchelistcheff, focues on Cab alone with spectacular results; cult wines sold via mailing list.” - Anthony Dias' blue pocket guide to wine 2006

"Quilceda Creek Vintners remains a model of consistency. In the outstanding 2005 vintage, Quilceda Creek’s Cabernet Sauvignon remains the benchmark for what can be achieved in Washington and the United States. Some good news from the winery is that beginning with the 2006 vintage, there will be a new vineyard designate, a Cabernet Sauvignon from the Palengat Vineyard in the Horse Heaven Hills AVA. The vines are only 7 years old but the potential is enormous as a taste from barrel attests." - Wine Advocate (Issue 177, July 2008)

The Vineyard
The grapes are sourced from 5 different vineyards: Champoux, Ceil du Cheval, Klipsun, Tapteil, Galitzine Estate, all in Benton City. They produce Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Columbia Valley Red Wine.

The Wines

2007 Quilceda Creek, Cabernet Sauvignon, Galitzine Vineyard 12/750ml
"The 2007 Galitzine Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon contains 1% Petit Verdot. It offers up a splendid bouquet of toasty new oak, earth notes, espresso, incense, blackberry, and plum. A bit more structured than the Palengat cuvee, it is slightly denser, layered, and intense. This very lengthy effort will benefit from 5-7 years of cellaring and will offer a drinking window extending from 2015 to 2037."

"This is a strikingly pure expression of single-vineyard, red Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon. Focused and tight, it is extremely dense and textural, with a mix of cassis and coffee. Some of the minerality of the neighboring Ciel du Cheval vineyard is just beginning to show in the fruit from these young vines as well."
- Wine Enthusiast (Sept. 2010), 91 pts

"Firm, with a light grip of tannins around a core of dark berry, currant, smoke and tobacco flavors. This has elegance and depth, with a welcome sense of reticence that doesn’t push the flavors too strong. Finishes very long, with a silky texture. Drink now through 2017."

2006 Quilceda Creek, Cabernet Sauvignon, Galitzine Vineyard 12/750ml
Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon coming from the Galitzine Vineyard, Red Mountain AVA
Aged in 100% New French Oak
Winemaker's notes:
The Quilceda Creek 2006 Galitzine Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon from the Red Mountain A.V.A is from a vineyard partnership between our family and the Holmes family of the highly acclaimed Ciel du Cheval Vineyard. This high density vineyard (2074 plants/acre) was planted in 2000 and 2001 with Clone 8 Cabernet Sauvignon on windblown Hezel over Warden soils. These deep, consistent, sandy loam soils are ideal for root development, vine health and vineyard uniformity. The 2006 offers wonderful aromas and flavors of deep blackberry, black walnut, espresso, truffles and pipe tobacco. The first two vintages received 97 points from The Wine Advocate, making them instant classics, and this vintage is their qualitative equal. Aged in 100% new French oak for 22 months, this 100% Cabernet Sauvignon displays the wonderful terroir of the Galitzine Vineyard. This wine will drink beautifully for the next 30 years.

"Deep ruby-red. Sweet blackberry, cassis, licorice pastille and violet on the nose, plus a whiff of mocha. Very fresh flavors of crushed blackberry, bitter chocolate and menthol boast excellent definition and lift, with exotic floral and spice notes adding nuance. The most complete vintage yet for this bottling, finishing with suave, building tannins and complex notes of cocoa powder, dried flowers and incense. Not at all overly sweet. Especially remarkable in light of the fact that these vines were planted in 2001 and 2002."

"The 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon Galitzine Vineyard, located in the Red Mountain AVA, is 100% varietal. Dark ruby/purple in color, it delivers an enticing nose of pain grille, pencil lead, earth notes, spice box, violets, and assorted black fruits. On the palate it is dense, ripe, full-bodied, and structured. Still a bit tightly wound, it will reveal its full potential with another 5-7 years of cellaring. It will provide much pleasure from 2015 to 2026 at the least."

2008 Quilceda Creek, Cabernet Sauvignon 12/750ml
The 2008 season began with a cool spring with bud-break delayed by about 10-14 days. The month of May presented a small heat spike followed by little precipitation. Similarly, the bloom was delayed 1-2 weeks. Entering into September, the temperatures were warm, sunny and dry allowing for even ripening of the fruit. After strict grading and selection, we were able to produce an extraordinary Cabernet Sauvignon.

The 2008 Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley (98% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Merlot) is a very opulent wine. With remarkable purity and focus, this wine reveals powerful blackberry, blueberry, plum and black currant fruit with nuances of chocolate, Asian spice and floral elements such as lavender and rose petal. With amazing texture, all of its components intertwine in perfect harmony. Approachable now this wine will age for 25+ years.

2007 Quilceda Creek, Cabernet Sauvignon 12/750ml
"This feels slightly softer in the mouth than the massive 2006, but carries the density and gravitas that one associates with Quilceda Creek. Wonderful balance, with a deeply detailed set of flavors that gather strength as they move through the palate. Mixed berries, threaded with chocolate, lingering with black cherry, cassis, smoke, cedar, lead pencil and more."

"The flagship 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon contains 3% Merlot. This multi-dimensional offering surrenders an inviting bouquet of sandalwood, Asian spices, violets, truffle, black currant, and blackberry. Seamless on the palate with no hard edges, it is mouth-coating, powerful, and exceptionally light on its feet all at the same time. Impeccably balanced and with plenty of fine-grained tannin in the background, it should effortlessly achieve its 30th birthday. The entire portfolio is a tour de force!"

2006 Quilceda Creek, Cabernet Sauvignon 12/750ml
Made from 97% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Merlot
Aged 100% New French Oak for 22 months. Bottling in August 2008.
The 2006 growing season started off as a wet spring with heat spikes toward the end of May and June reducing vigor. This was followed by a hot July and a mild Sept/Oct with some light precipitation allowing the fruit to come off the vine in great condition. After a very stringent selection of the best barrels, we were able to produce a classic Cabernet Sauvignon.

"The 2006 Quilceda Creek Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is an intense and floral wine that is packed with violets, blackberry, cassis, plum and chocolate. The wine has sublime purity, texture and balance. Approachable now, it should reach maturity around 2015 and age for 25 or more years. While we are particularly proud of the last four vintages of our flagship wine, the 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the best wines our estate has ever produced, rivaling 2002, 2003 and 2005 in quality." - the winemaker

Wine Enthusiast (March 2010), 98 pts

"
The flagship 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon comes predominantly from the famous Champoux Vineyard in which the winery is a partner. It was aged in 100% new oak. It sports a deep purple-color with a captivating nose of spice box, sandalwood, truffle, Asian spices, incense, black cherry, and black currant. Opulent on the palate (but elegant as well), it already reveals serious complexity, density, and succulence of fruit. Enjoyable now but with at least 8-10 years of cellaring potential, this marvelous effort should have a 30 year lifespan."
- Wine Advocate (October 2009), 99 pts

"Very ripe and generous. Not a big wine, but brims with plum, currant, black olive, cedar and roasted meat flavors, all playing against crisp tannins and lingering on the tight finish. Needs time in the cellar in order to open and flourish. Best from 2012 through 2020."
