Luis Canas Rioja Blanco
Bodegas Luis Canas
Spain - La Rioja - Rioja

This white Rioja from one of the regions most enduring family run wineries is produced from hillside vineyards sheltered by the Sierra Cantabria Mountains to the north from harsh weather extremes. Small plot production is utilized in this region of infertile chalky clay soil to produce clusters of excellent quality. Almost 900 plots are needed to complete the approximately 400 hectares of estate-owned or cellar-controlled vineyards, some with vines more than 100 years in age. The average age of the vines is 40 years.

tim atkin logo 250"Juan Luis Cañas and his winemaking team produce this sensitively oaked cuvée from a combination of Viura and Malvasía, with the latter adding some perfume and weight to the freshness of the former. Apricot, tangerine and citrus flavours combine nicely with the oak spices. 2020-23"

vinous logo"(aged for three months in new French oak barrels) Limpid yellow-gold. Dried pear, lemon pith, melon and vanilla aromas, along with suggestions of honeysuckle and toasted grain. Chewy and sharply focused on entry, then more broad and fleshy in the mid-palate, offering juicy orchard and pit fruit and orange zest flavors and a building suggestion of toasty lees. Delivers a suave blend of depth and energy and finishes long and tense, with a sexy floral quality lingering. This bottling delivers outstanding value. - Josh Raynolds"

wa89"The just-bottled, barrel-fermented 2017 Blanco Fermentado en Barrica is a blend of 85% Viura and 15% Malvasía Riojana. It matured in new oak barrels (75% French, the rest American) in contact with the lees and bâtonnage twice per week for three months. It's young, fresh and fruitdriven with little inuence from the barrel and with dominant aromas of apple. The palate shows some austerity, fresh fruit and clean flavors. 93,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in December 2017."

vinous logo"(raised in new French oak barrels for three-and-a-half months) Pale gold. Ripe pear, melon and yellow apple aromas are complemented by suggestions of pungent flowers and vanilla. Supple and seamless in the mouth, offering pliant, oak-spiced orchard and pit fruit flavors that tighten up slowly on the back half. Shows very good focus and thrust on the finish, which leaves behind notes of candied citrus fruits and honey. - Josh Raynolds"

wine enthusiast 89 pts"This barrel-fermented Rioja is woody and toasty up front, although exotic white-fruit aromas with a minerally boost can handle the barrel influence. Almost Burgundian in style and weight, this tastes like honey, nectarine and wood spice. Fresh acidity, generous body weight and creamy, woody stone-fruit flavors close it out."

wa300"Luis Cañas, located in Rioja Alavesa, has turned out a delicious dry white, the 2014 Rioja Blanco, made from 90% Viura and 10% Malvasia. No doubt, the latter component gives it its fragrant, floral notes, but the vibrancy of the lovely melony and currant-like fruit are all present in this delicious, dry, zesty wine that is excellent and, of course, a terrific bargain. Drink now."

"iwinereviewVanilla, honeyed oak and floral aromas. Superbly balanced palate with excellent clarity and a firm mineral component showing grapefruit citrus and toasty oak. An 85/15 blend of old vine (50 years) Viura and Malvasia fermented and aged in new oak (75% French, 25% American) for 4 months with lees stirring. A precise, crystal clean wine that improves the longer it's open."

"tanzer iwc 90 pts(90% viura and 10% malvasia; raised in new French oak for three and a half months): Pale yellow. Intense aromas of fresh peach, pineapple and lemon pith complicated by floral and ginger topnotes. Juicy and expansive on the palate, with vibrant acidity giving cut and focus to the ripe pit and tropical fruit flavors. Spicy notes linger on the sappy, sharply focused finish, which leaves a bitter quinine note behind. This is a superb value in white Rioja. - Josh Raynolds"
