Laughing Dog Brewing is an award winning craft brewery from Sandpoint Idaho (population 7000), in the heart of the Selkirk Mountains. The brewery is located on Lake Ponderay, the fifth deepest fresh water lake (1500 ft) in the United States with its 112 mile coastline, which provides the water for these crisp, clean beers. The Schweitzer Mountain Resort only a few miles away boasts 92 ski runs at 6,200 feet above sea level.
Brewer Fred Colby and his wife Michelle (former employees of Coldwater Creek) own the brewery. Fred, a home brewer, decided to pursue his passion of brewing beer and started Laughing Dog Brewing in 2005.
Fred likes nice hoppy beers, from his Pale Ale to the 127 IBU Alpha Dog Imperial IPA, but is versatile in his beer brewing: consider the Dogfather Imperial Stout and his latest creation, Anubis, an Imperial Coffee Stout. The Dogfather Stout also has a 'Bourbon Barrel' counterpart, aged in Heaven Hills Bourbon Barrels. Fred is also using the Heaven Hills Bourbon Barrels on experimental beers, some of which will be released.
The Laughing Yellow Lab that appears on all of their brews is Ben, their family dog. Ben's loyal and relaxed attitude, appetite for quality food, and constant desire for walks to complete his healthy lifestyle has served as the perfect inspiration for all the brews at Laughing Dog Brewing.
Ben is the inspiration behind Laughing Dog Brewing.
The brewpub maintains the dog theme throughout, even using dog bowls for serving snack mix to the customers. Fred & Michelle also allow customers to bring their dogs.
Laughing Dog Brewing Owners Ben (the dog), Michelle and Fred Colby hope that you enjoy drinking their beers as much as they enjoy making them.
Focused on Quality and Purity
One thing they take very seriously at Laughing Dog Brewing is the quality, consistency and purity of their brewing. They try to make your experience the same from concept to tap or bottle, in any state that they distribute.
They brew their Beer on a fifteen barrel brew-house using local clean and pure water, which is ideal for brewing smooth clean ales. With few exceptions they use only Water, Barley, Hops and Yeast in their beer. This simple and focused approach has allowed them to make beers that are fresh, smooth, rich, and full of flavors.
Laughing Dogs' brewpub/brewery can provide 5,000 barrels of beer (a far cry from the 1000 barrels that were produced in their first year) and are already making plans for further expansion up to 15,000 barrels.
Laughing Dog Brewery is a Vegan Brewery confirmed. They do not use any animal products in the filtration process.
