Lyrarakis Mandilari Plakoura
Lyrarakis Estate
Greece - Crete

The rare low-yield Plakoura vineyard is the equivalent to a Premier Cru slope at 500 m. altitude, with sandy, stony soil. The head-trained pruning, in combination with the north-east exposure of the vineyard and plenty of sunshine, ensures that the grapes reach optimum ripeness at the time of harvest. Very thorough cultivation helps Lyrarakis achieve extremely low yields, succeeding in crafting a very concentrated wine with a deep red color and an excellent structure, which will age for a long time.

Deep, intense red color. In the nose, complex aromas of juicy plums, toffee and licorice are superbly balanced by the chocolate and vanilla notes provided by its ageing process in oak. In the mouth it is well concentrated with a lively lingering finish. This wine has an excellent bottle ageing potential that can overpass 10 years.

2017 Lyrarakis Mandilari Plakoura - 93 PTS - WINE ANORAK

2017 Lyrarakis Mandilari Plakoura - 93 PTS - WINE ANORAK

wine anorak logo"500 m altitude with a sandy, stony soil. This is fresh and concentrated with lovely structure under the vivid black cherry and blackberry fruit, with some raspberry crunch. This is really structured and grippy with some minty hints and firm tannins: a bold, fresh, focused red wine of real intensity. Lovely purity here, and amazing potential for development."

2017 Lyrarakis Mandilari Plakoura - 90 PTS - WA

wa90"The 2017 Mandilari Plakoura Vineyard was aged for 12 months in an approximately equal mixture of French and American oak (50% new). It comes in at 13.3% alcohol. A very fine bargain, this is beautifully structured, elegant, fresh and supported with moderate tannins. The wood is a little obvious just now but so is the flavorful and bold fruit, which dribbles cherry nuances all over the palate. It's delicious, it's balanced, and the structure gives it a chance to age and develop. We'll see how it develops, but it's worth leaning up just now. You can drink this now, but another year in the cellar wouldn't hurt. - Mark Squires"
