This Vermentino is stunning. Think citrus freshness, limes, preserved lemon, a touch of green apple -- racy acidity combined with a robust structure, and finished with a slightly salty tang. Lean and crisp, this wine cries out for seafood.
2014 Harvest Notes:
Virginia was spared some (but not all) of the extreme cold that affected grape growing regions to our north and west over the winter of 2013 and 2014. Northern Virginia, the western Piedmont and southwest Virginia took the brunt of it, while here in Southern Virginia the effect was somewhat modulated. Still, we suffered some extreme temperatures, dropping to 6 °F on January 7, 8° F on January 23, and -1° F on January 29. Frost claimed our Viognier, which buds early, but the other varieties survived unscathed. An unusually wet growing season in May and June was followed by an unusually dry September to mid-October. Cloudy, cool weather late in the season stalled the ripening of our red fruit, though with the absence of rain in September and October, the quality of the white grapes was outstanding.
