Justine reflects our belief that Washington is capable of producing world class blends of grape varieties traditional to the Southern Rhone region of France. The name is inspired by one of the great heroines of recent literature, who also sprung from the imagination of the Mediterranean. Dark, seductive, complex, with a chasm of depth: The Justine is a great reflection of Avennia's mission of expression, and Washington's generous terroir.
The 2013 vintage marks a new era for Justine. It is the first year we began to source Upland Vineyard Grenache to the blend. This beautiful south-facing site in the middle of the Yakima Valley produces some of the best Grenache in the state, almost Old World in style, which we have blended with our other Grenache block in the Horse Heaven Hills, and Mourvedre and Syrah from Red Mountain, to create our version of the Southern Rhone blend. The vibrancy and focused fruit characters that are emblematic of the vintage are particularly well suited to this lively and complex wine.
Leading with aromas of black raspberry, kirsch, lavender, jasmine, and wet limestone, the palate is concentrated and focused, with a complex array of dark red fruits, blackberry from the Mourvedre, licorice root, garrigue, and finishing with savory umami notes and a stony minerality that evokes the Old World wines that inspired this classic blend.
