Chakana is a family owned winery located at 960 meters (3,149 feet) above sea level at the foothills of the Andes Mountains in Agrelo, Mendoza. It is one of the leading projects among the new generation of winemakers dedicated to the discovery and expression of the Andean diversity of climate and soils.
Founded in 2002 by Juan Pelizzatti, a son of Italian immigrants with historic roots in northern Italy's viticulture, and under the guidance of Gabriel Bloise, a young and adventurous winemaker, Chakana has developed a wine style that has become known for its purity and authenticity.
"An incredible discovery for me, this winery was founded a decade ago and named after the Southern Cross ("Chakana" is the local Indian dialect for that constellation). It is located approximately 20 miles south of Mendoza in Agrelo. All three of these wines are highly recommended, and all are fabulous bargains in Malbec." - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (June 2012)
Date Founded: May 2, 2002
Managing Partner: Juan Pelizzatti
Winery Mission Statement: To create true wines which can honor the wisdom of the ancient ancestors of their land.
When Chakana was founded on May 2, 2002, the Southern Cross (a constellation named Chakana by the indigenous people of the Andes highlands) reached a perfectly vertical position in the sky, marking the beginning of a new farming cycle. The Southern Cross holds the key to finding the perfect timing for the cultivation and harvesting of crops. It is a calendar, a compass, and a symbol of the link between earth and spirit. The choice of this name is an homage to the Inca understanding and respect for nature's forces.
Chakana wines are designed under the renowned international wine consultant Alberto Antonini. Alberto first came to Argentina in 1995, after key contributions to the Super-Tuscan movement in the italian winemaking landscape at Antinori and Frescobaldi. He immediately sensed the potential of Malbec and devoted most of his work in the following 15 years to the re-discovery and perfection of this now argentine gem.
He now consults for over 10 projects in Argentina, as well as renowned properties in the US, South Africa, Australia, Romania, Armenia, Chile and Italy.
Alberto's winemaking philosophy is focused on using modern technology to express the terroir potential in making high end wines, while respecting the true nature of the grape flavors.

Starting from its 150 ha (371 acre) home vineyard in Agrelo, in 2011, Chakana expanded by acquiring two vineyards in Altamira, Valle de Uco and a 100 year-old Malbec vineyard in historic Mayor Drummond, Lujan de Cuyo. This has created a rich palette of soils and climates, which range from the calcareous soils and high altitude Altamira, through the loamy colluvial soils of Agrelo, to the warmer gravelly character of Mayor Drummond. The aim was to create wines that could naturally suit every preference while featuring the distinctive character of sunbathed Mendoza. In order to ensure the purest vineyard expression, and as a consequence of their reverence for nature's wisdom, Chakana has adopted organic and biodynamic viticulture practices since 2012. Vintage 2014 has been certified organic by IFOAM (International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movement).

"Chakana’s wines are getting better with every vintage under winemaker Gabriel Bloise."
- Tim Atkin, Argentina Special Report 2016
The color is deep purple, very intense, quite what you expect from Malbec. Plum, brambly berries, spices and an iris/violet note are apparent on the nose. Intense, fruity flavors with velvety tannins.

80% is coming from the Agrelo vineyard, which is mainly clay and brings a lot of freshness in the wine.
The other 20% are from the Altamira vineyard, which gives riper fruit and allows a little more oak.
Excellent with roasted meats, duck, salad, pasta, pizza.
"(15% new oak): Dark red with ruby tones. Brooding aromas of blackberry syrup, licorice and menthol are lifted by a hint of violet. Juicy and very primary, with dark fruit and herb flavors dominating. Firmly built and still tightly wound; in need of another six months to express itself. Finishes dry in a positive way, with a solid backbone. - Stephen Tanzer"

"A new look for Chakana’s wines, this is a blend of Malbec from Altamira and Gualtallary. The wine’s aged in concrete vats (60%), the remainder in well used oak. The fruit is simply delicious, crisp, bracing, loaded with notes of fresh cherries. It’s a red that beautifully expresses place, a mountain wine with all those red fruit elements, but also herbs and spices. The texture seems to firmly latch on to the palate, seemingly unwilling to let go until it finds a nice chunk of roast beef. And the price. Appears to be in jest, but no. It’s not."

"I’ve never seen such elegance,” says Gabriel Bloise, speaking of the 2016 vintage. This is a zesty, refreshing, adroitly oaked blend of grapes from mostly Paraje Altamira with 30% Gualtallary. Floral and subtle, it has rose petal scents and succulent wild strawberry fruit underscored by acidity. 2019-26."
- Tim Atkin, Argentina Special Report 2018, 92 pts
"Ripe and generous with a hint of caramel, yet enough tannins to keep it on track. If the finish was longer and/or more exciting it would rate higher. Drink or hold."
- James Suckling (April 2018), 90 pts
"I find the 2016 Estate Selection Malbec to be riper and oakier, with a dusty palate where the abundant chalky tannins give it a powdery texture. It comes from Paraje Altamira, and only 20% of the wine matured in 225-liter oak barrels. However, it feels like that élevage marked the blend quite a lot. 90,000 bottles produced. - Luis Gutierrez"
- Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (Issue #237, June 2018), 89 pts
"Bright, dark red. Pungent Cabernet aromas of redcurrant, mocha, tobacco leaf, peppery herbs and chocolate. A suave, fine-grained midweight with a distinctly herbal element to its flavors of redcurrant, plum, licorice and tobacco; an element of savory minerality offers another dimension. Ultimately a bit green-peppery for my taste, finishing with mouth-dusting, somewhat drying tannins and a repeating herbal quality. This Cabernet is hard to warm to right now but I'd like to see it again in a year or two. Very 2016 in style. - Stephen Tanzer"

"Combining 15% fruit from Gualtallary for the first time, this Paraje Altamira-based Malbec is getting better with every vintage. Stylish oak, floral aromas (with a dash of grassy Cabernet Franc) and tangy red berry fruit underpinned by fine tannins. 2018-25"
- Tim Atkin (Argentina Special Report 2017),94 pts
"A full blast of cassis and blackberry aromas conveys ripeness, while a side of murky earth is a barrier to greater excellence. On the palate, this is chewy, tannic and rich. Plum and blackberry flavors are familiar for quality Mendoza Malbec, while this feels a bit rubbery and tannic on the finish. For a marginal vintage like 2015, this deserves praise. Drink through 2023. - Michael Schachner"
- Wine Enthusiast (February 1st 2019),90 pts
"Dark red. Musky aromas and flavors of cherry, raspberry and mocha. Supple, attractively glyceral wine with a fine-grained texture and good sappy lift. Classy, delineated, savory Malbec with firming spice and mineral elements and subtle depth and breadth. Finishes with dusty, very fine tannins and building spicy length. This very suave Malbec displays subtle salinity and restrained sweetness.- Stephen Tanzer"

"Chakana’s wines are getting better with every vintage under winemaker Gabriel Bloise. This concrete-fermented Malbec was aged in old oak and is all about fruit and finesse. Minerally, focused and refreshing, this is long and satisfying with a chalky flourish. 2016-22"

"Bottled in March 2015, the 2014 Estate Selection Malbec seems to have changed its origin to Altamira (but it's not explicit on the label). The wine matured in used 225-liter French oak barrels and cement vats. The nose is ripe and fruit-driven, with aromas of dark cherries and plums plus a subdued minerality and a touch of spices. Most noticeable is the really well-integrated oak (only founder and well-seasoned barrels are used for this wine). The palate is juicy, fresh and has good balance with a somewhat bittersweet finish that is attractive and commercial. This is a great expression of fresh and elegant Malbec from Altamira at a very attractive price point. 130,000 bottles produced. - Luis Gutierrez"
- The Wine Advocate (Issue #220, August 2015), 91 pts
"Malbec accounts for 60 percent of this blend, adding soft tannins and seductive violet notes to cabernet sauvignon’s firm, tannic structure, while syrah fills in with its meaty, spicy fruit. It’s a complex, rich red from growers in Gualtallary and Altamira, both in the Uco Valley."

"
This has a deep well of dark currant, kirsch and dried blueberry flavors interwoven with an intense spiciness. Shows a powerful structure, with a pure, fresh and minerally finish filled with loamy and dark chocolate notes. Drink now through 2020. 1,500 cases imported. –KM"

"
This large winery in Mendoza, Argentina makes numerous wines under the Maipe, Chakana and Cueva de las Manos labels. Almost all of them represent good values. The more expensive cuvées include the 2013 Chakana Malbec Estate, a 100% Malbec from the finest vineyards. Aged in both new and one-year-old French oak for 18 months, it reveals a deep plum/ruby/purple color, sweet blackberry and white chocolate notes intermixed with cassis and licorice, medium body, a velvety texture and a lush personality. Drink it over the next 2-3 years. - Robert Parker"
- Wine Advocate (November 2014), 89 pts
"Chakana's 2012 Malbec Estate (100% Malbec aged in new and used French oak for 18 months) exhibits a dense, saturated ruby/purple color along with a sweet perfume of charcoal, white chocolate, blueberries and blackberries intermixed with hints of forest floor and spring flowers. A wine of delicacy, suppleness and full-bodied power as well as tremendous harmony and purity, it will provide pleasure over the next 7-8 years."
Wine Advocate (Robert Parker, Issue 208, August 2013), 92 pt
"Opaque purple. The Chakana Malbec is a lush, meaty wine reveal rich dark chocolate and sweet blackberry in a beautifully concentrated package. It's modern and generous with big, spicy flavors and well-integrated oak that linger and linger. Aged in new and used oak barrels for 18 months."
I-Wine Review (December 2013), 92 pts
"
Opulent in its ripe red fruit, this is an international-style malbec, bolstered by candied cherry notes. And yet it's also firm, held up by a strong backbone of tannins, whiskied along by acidity that leaves a trail of sweet spice in its wake. Ready for roast duck."
- Wine & Spirits Magazine (February 2015), 90 pts
"The 2011 Estate Selection, much like the 2010, is 100% Malbec all from their Agrelo vineyard. Aged in mostly American oak, the 2011 has an inky purple color, plenty of chocolaty blackberry and cassis fruit, good acidity, sweet tannins and a fleshy, medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, with briery fruit that sometimes veers toward Zinfandel but pulls back with Malbec's blacker fruit character."
Wine Advocate (Robert Parker, Issue 201, June 2012), 92 pts
"The 2011 Chakana Estate Selection Malbec comes from Uco and Lujan de Cuyo and is aged for 12 months in French oak (30% new). Tasted twice, it has a delightful bouquet with crisp red cherry, strawberry and vanilla scents that are beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, supple tannins and crisp acidity. It is harmonious and focused, with caressing vibrant red berry fruit on the bright, classy finish. This is a sophisticated Malbec: feminine and seductive. Drink now-2018."
Wine Advocate (Neal Martin, Issue 203, October 2012), 92 pts
"Saturated, deep ruby-red. Sexy, syrah-like aromas of raspberry, blackberry, blueberry and game. Dense, silky and sweet, with harmonious acidity giving clarity to the fine-grained dark berry, violet and game flavors. With aeration, redder fruits emerged. Finishes long and perfumed, with tannins dusting the front teeth. Already boasts superb appeal, but this has the constitution and balance to evolve gracefully in bottle."
