2013 Harvest Notes:
The onset of the 2013 growing season may be regarded as more “average” for Virginia than 2012, which began very early. Bud Break began generally around the third week of April, and conditions in April and much of May remained cool. Scattered frosts occurred near the end of April and again in May, but that affected only the northern Shenandoah Valley and northern Virginia. The rains came in June and continued through July, and the egg-laying of periodical cicadas disrupted life for young vineyards with their egg-laying. August is normally dry, but not this year. In September the weather improved, becoming warm and unusually dry, with cool evenings – perfect for fruit ripening. Harvest went surprisingly well, with no tropical depressions or hurricanes to take their toll. Overall, it was a good year producing a superior vintage.
This Cabernet Franc is beautiful, with teasing persistence and power. Think coffee, root beer, chocolate, Nutella, graham cracker and cherry liqueur. The judicious use of oak gives this wine intense structure; decant so it reveals itself. You will enjoy this wine for years to come.
