Jannie is the 5th generation of Louws to have farmed Eikeboom (Eikeboom means "oak tree grove"), the first being Jan Nicolaas in 1864. Known originally as de Eikenbomen, the farm has been in existence since the early 19th century, having been recorded by travelers at the time. It is beautifully situated near the small village of Hermon in the heart of the Boland, Western Cape, South Africa. The mountains, the Elandskloofberge, provide a spectacular visual backdrop.
Essentially a wheat farmer, Jannie has long had a passion for viticulture. Today he has resurrected the art of wine making as practiced by his grandfather, Ou Jan 'Ligtewyn' whose reputation stemmed from the fact he produced a better quality vintage than normally obtained in the area at the time. Jannie Louw is a Hobbyist winemaker. Jannie's brother makes wine in Paarl at Baardeberg.
Production is low volume, high quality, in the garagiste style with Jannie taking meticulous care over all aspects. His range includes: Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay.
The Farm is around 900 hectares (Sheep, wheat, Cattle, and grapes.) 70 hectares of grapes. Production about 2,000 cases in total. They currently sell 90% of their grapes to Wellington Cellars.
The Eikeboom Pinotage tastes like a cross of Pinot Noir and Zinfandel. It has some finesse and some power all together. It is juicy, fruity, new world Rhône style fruit bomb with a touch of oak, vanilla and coffee flavors. There is a good minerality as well, giving some lead pencil notes, quite delicious.

Wine Making Notes
Pinotage is the result of the cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault varieties. Pinotage was created by in South Africa in 1925 by Stellenbock University professor A.I. Perold, during experiments to develop new varieties. The wine is aged in 50% new barrels and 50% 1 year old barrels.
The grapes for this wine comes from a 4 hectare-parcel (10 acres) devided in 2 different plots. The first plot was planted in 2000 and the second plot was planted in 2011. The wine is a blend of the wines coming from both plots. It is all trellised trained.
2015 Eikeboom Pinotage - 88 PTS - BEST BUY - W&S
"With horse-saddle scents and the finer leather notes of a watch case, this has plenty of plum-skin fruitiness to balance all the umami savor. It’s a tense pinotage for braised game." - Wine & Spirits Magazine (February 2018), 88 pts - Best Buy
"Interestingly enough, when one looks at the different grape varietals pioneered in South Africa, Pinotage only represents eight percent of the production, which was certainly a surprise to me. Slightly more intense Pinotage than the Riebeek recommended elsewhere in this report, this dark-colored 2010 possesses cranberry and cherry richness intermixed with some spice box, earth and herbs. It is fresh, medium-bodied and could be served chilled if readers desire, given its Beaujolais-like weight and texture. Drink it over the next 1-2 years. - Robert Parker"
