- Napa Valley
The original and flagship wine for GAMBA Vineyards and Winery from our family Estate Vineyard in the Russian River Valley planted in 1900.
A delightfully brilliant, dark ruby-garnet greets your eyes. Aromas in the nose offer a buoyant perfume of ripe cherry, raspberry compote, cocoa and sweet toasted oak. Full to medium bodied on the palate, with deep and vibrant flavors of black cherry, dark berry bramble fruit, black olive, and a cascading spice, are wrapped in lavish, creamy toasty oak, and framed by a proportionate balance of acidity. Mouthfeel is rich and decadent, with a silky polished texture, rounded out with glycerin-like seamlessness that gracefully dances with finely integrated tannins. Sensuous, layered flavors of dark berry fruit and compelling, sweet toasty oak persist in a long, enjoyable finish.
2013 Growing season:
The weather helped produce uniformity throughout the growing season- uniform bloom, and a uniform harvest, the keys to a great vintage season. The year began with minimal rain and a warm spring, indicating a need to use a variety of viticultural practices to mitigate any potential early heat damage. Careful canopy management allowed natural shade and dappled sunlight to protect the grapes in the early growth stages, and assisted the success of bloom. Early to mid-season suckering removed unwanted growth and preserved vine energy for the later stages of ripening. July was the one of the warmest in recent years, encouraging cluster development, leading us squarely on the path toward harvest. We were fortunate to achieve a nice yield with optimal maturity and ripeness without threat of rain, and conclude a spectacular harvest somewhat relaxed, without the typical frenzy of activity to rush the grapes into the winery. We were thrilled that our diligence in the vineyard rewarded us with a superb yield and incredibly high fruit quality - and some of the deepest, exquisite flavors we have ever experienced.
Vineyard Information: The Gamba Estate Vineyard
Planted in the Russian River Valley on gently rolling terrain above the valley floor in 1900, the Gamba Estate Vineyard is organically maintained and dry farmed, relying on winter rains as its sole source of irrigation. This historic old vine vineyard produces very low yields of outstanding fruit, approximately only one half ton per acre. The low yields provide concentrated flavors, and we strive to capture and bring these intense flavors to your glass. This historic, treasured, and spectacular vineyard site is truly a shining star among the relatively few old vine vineyards left in Sonoma County, and we are honored to share with you its glorious bounty.
