KEERMONT SYRAH 2012 is a blend of two Syrah vineyard sites. Steepside Syrah: Grown on a North facing slope in deep red clay rich soils, this vineyard produces powerful full bodied wines with rich spicy flavours; and Topside Syrah: an unirrigated west facing block planted at 400m above sea level on rocky sandstone based soil.
Topside Syrah is usually a more aromatic wine with a lighter more refined structure. The blend was complimented by two barrels of Mourvedre also grown in the Steepside vineyard. This adds to the complexity of the flavours and tannin structure.
All grapes used in producing our wines are grown on Keermont Vineyards. Small parcels of grapes are specifically selected according to ripeness, harvested by hand and vinified separately. This process is carried out gently and naturally in open top fermenters using traditional methods only.
This wine spent 20 months maturing in French oak barrels (5% new) before being bottled by hand without filtration on 25 November 2013. 11 183 bottles and 98 magnum bottles were produced.
Vintage Report: A warm, relatively dry winter and early spring meant good weather for pruning. Bud break was fairly quick and even. Light showers of rain throughout the early spring meant that we didn’t need to irrigate over this period, but regular sprays needed to be applied due to high disease pressure. Shoots grew quickly and canopy management soon became a priority. Cool, but generally good, conditions during flowering led to good and even fruit set. The weather started to warm-up and dry-out during December. The start of the ripening period was marked by a heat wave with temperatures in the mid-thirties (˚C) in early January. Grapes changed colour quickly and evenly. The warm, dry conditions led to grapes ripening quickly with little variation between cultivars. Harvest started on the 7 February and it soon became apparent that we would have to get a lot of the grapes off in a short space of time. Eventually the whole crop of 9 varieties and 82 tons was picked by 4 March (under 4 weeks!). No mean feat for a relatively small and inexperienced team.
