2016 Keermont White Blend Terrasse

A polished light yellow gold color, this wine has a bouquet of citrus blossom with hazelnut, lemon grass and butterscotch undertones. The wine has a soft sweet entry with a racy linear acidity. Ripe citrus and stone fruit flavors evolve into a lovely lingering dry earthy finish. This is a textured white wine with layers of flavor.

Grape Varietals: 39% Chenin Blanc (34% Riverside parcel - 26% Low Road Parcel and 5% Bobbejaan parcel), 34% Sauvignon Blanc (Uitkyk parcel), 14% Viognier (Cottage Lane parcel) and 13% Chardonnay (Low Road Parcel).
ABV: 14%
Aging: fermented in seasoned French oak barrels and then spend a further 12 months maturing on the lees.

Wine Making Notes:

The Keermont Terrasse is a white blend which derives its name from the terraced vineyards from which the grapes are harvested. The backbone of this blend is Chenin Blanc from a 40 year old un-irrigated vineyard called ‘Riverside’ and Sauvignon Blanc produced from a 24 year old un-irrigated vineyard called ‘Uitkyk’. This is complimented by Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay and Viognier from younger vineyards. 2014 saw one of our main Chenin Blanc blocks, Low Road, severely affected by Powdery Mildew, hence the lower percentage of Chenin in the final blend than usual. Total production was just 13 barrels yielding 6500 bottles.
All grapes used in producing our wines are grown on Keermont Vineyards. Small parcels of grapes are selected according to optimal ripeness and harvested by hand in the cool of the early morning. The grapes are vinified gently and naturally following traditional techniques. White wines are fermented in seasoned French oak barrels and then spend a further 12 months maturing on the lees. Bottling is carried out by hand without filtration. A warm, dry winter was followed by a mild spring with some good rain showers. This led to good growth and canopy development although budding and flowering were slightly uneven.Weather started to warm up and dry out during December. High humidity kept the disease pressure up and regular sprays continued into the beginning of January. Some very warm conditions were experienced through January with one three day long heat wave delivering temperatures of up to 40 degrees. Fortunately, we were quite well prepared in our irrigation scheduling and vineyards didn’t stress. Harvest started on the 8 February. Temperatures moderated nicely during February and into March with relatively few hot days. This allowed for pleasant harvesting conditions where blocks could be left to ripen without too much concern of the sugars increasing quickly. We eventually picked 105 tons over seven weeks. The grapes all came in with good chemical analysis and in a generally healthy condition with good flavor and phenolic development. pH: 3.48 TA: 4.8g/L RS: 2.6g/L TSO2: 82mg/L VA: 0.62g/L
