There are winemakers across the globe crafting delicious, fruit-driven wines. There are wineries who are using the most expensive glass, who have hired the most creative artists to design their labels, who have created the most luxurious tasting rooms. Then, there are wineries whose efforts and resources have been devoted to creating the most satisfying wine they can conceive. Fran Kysela set out to find the latter - the ones who are focused on the juice in the bottle, so that he could offer consumers a pleasurable drink at a pleasurable price. He found what he was looking for, and he calls it Rubus.
Rubus is a private label created and used by Kysela Pere et Fils, LTD in order to buy, bottle and market wine found at an incredible quality/price ratio. Over the past few years, Rubus has become an international brand, encompassing wines from various continents. All Rubus wines are selected by Fran Kysela MS.
The first Rubus wine was a superb batch of 1,200 cases of 1997 Amador County Zinfandel. The wine sold out in a few days, and the Rubus label wasn’t used for the next 12 years.
During a trip to California in 2009, when Fran Kysela tasted some incredible wines (available in bottle but without label), he decided to help resurrect the brand by creating an outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon from Stag's Leaps district in Napa Valley (California), followed by an excellent Chardonnay from Russian River Valley (California).
We then developed the Rubus Old Vine Zinfandel from Lodi (California), followed by a Shiraz/Viognier blend from the Barossa in Australia. 2012 saw the addition of Chardonnay from Colchagua Valley in Chile, and in early 2013 we added 2 new wines from Spain, a Rosado made with the Prieto Picudo grape varietal from Spain, and an Old Vines Tempranillo from Arlanza. New for 2015 is a Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand, and a Proprietary Reserve red blend from Australia.
Over the past 7 years, the Rubus project has grown in terms of sku’s, sources and quality. Rubus is a true representation of quality for the consumer at an excellent price.
This California Cabernet Sauvignon has rich flavors with a hint of black currant and cherry. The tannins are soft, leading to a smooth finish with a hint of oaked vanilla and a touch of eucalyptus/mint freshness.
