Burgo Viejo Rioja Tinto
Bodegas Burgo Viejo
Spain - Rioja - Rioja

Burgo Viejo Tinto comes from a careful selection of the grapes during the harvest followed by meticulous vinification to extract the highest potential of the grapes in an effort to achieve a fresh, powerful, fruit-driven young wine that will satisfy a wide range of palates.

The wine shows fresh aromas of red fruit, strawberry candy- on a very subtle background of sweet vanilla and cocoa. In mouth it is also fresh with balanced acidity, good length and absolutely velvety tannins.

Energetic and intensely fruity on the nose and in the mouth, displaying fresh strawberry and boysenberry qualities and a hint of spiciness. vinous logo"Deep ruby. Aromas of fresh red fruits and pungent flowers take on a hint of allspice with aeration. Juicy, energetic and focused on the palate, offering bitter cherry and raspberry flavors given lift and spine by tangy acidity. Shows a touch of darker fruits on the nicely persistent finish, which leaves behind bitter cherry and cassis notes. - Josh Raynolds"

wa88"These wines are from the same producer as the Palacio del Burgo offerings reviewed later in this report, and, for my taste, seem almost identical to those wines. The 2013 Tinto reveals delicious, ripe, savory, black cherry and blackcurrant fruit intermixed with notions of tobacco leaf, spice box, new saddle leather and a lovely, lush, heady mouthfeel. Drink now-2017. - Robert Parker"

tanzer iwc 88 pts"(85% tempranillo, 10% garnacha and 5% mazuelo; no oak): Inky ruby. Blackberry, cherry compote and fresh flowers on the nose. Lush, open-knit dark berry flavors show good clarity and no rough edges. Supple and seamless in texture, finishing with gentle sweetness and very soft tannins. Extremely easy to drink, with the heft to handle rich or assertively seasoned foods."

Wine Advocate "The grapiest and youngest of this trio, the 2012 Tinto is composed of 85% Tempranillo and the rest Garnacha and Mazuelo, aged totally in concrete and stainless steel. It possesses a deep ruby/purple color along with medium body, copious amounts of creme de cassis, licorice and lead pencil shavings and a moderately endowed, supple, intense, richly fruity personality. Drink it over the next 2-3 years."

2011 Burgo Viejo Rioja Tinto - 87 PTS - WA

"From a cooperative of six families founded in 1987, Burgo Viejo’s delicious 2011 Tinto (a blend of 85% Tempranillo and the rest 10% Grenache and 5% Mazuelo, aged largely in concrete vats) is a mid-weight Spanish fruit bomb. Loads of black cherry and black currant fruit intermixed with some licorice, tobacco leaf and spice box jump from the glass of this deep ruby/purple-tinged wine. It is medium-bodied, lush and ideal for drinking over the next several years. Don’t expect complexity, but rather a hedonistic style of Rioja that sells for a song."
