Barbaresco is a family affair at La Spinona. From the grandfather Pietro, to his son Gualtiero and then his grandson Pietropaolo: for decades, the Berutti family has believed in the land on the hills of the municipality of Barbaresco, a place dedicated to the production of great wines.
La Spinona is a company that represents its founder Pietro Berutti, a man of great experience who believed in Barbaresco since the 1940s. Pietro’s son Gualtiero, an experienced veterinary surgeon, brought his expertise not only to the breeding of Piemontese cattle, but also to the cultivation of the vineyards and selection of the best products, while respecting the environment. This is a responsibility he continues to bear, confident that his commitment is shared by his son Pietropaolo, a wine-making technician and head of production in the winery, together with the marketing side.
La Spinona, a name associated with the land, originates from part of the family’s life history: the still-vivid memory of their dog, Baica, a Spinone Italiano (a special breed of Piedmontese hunting dog). She was a friend and “sister”, who accompanied Pietro for years along the path that led to the development of the winery in the late 1940s. Baica is a symbol that still has pride of place on the company logo and, throughout the world, represents the history of a winery that makes high-quality wine through meticulous work and attention to nature, to obtain wines that are clean, elegant and traditional.
The Berutti bought 6 hectares in 1994 in the relatively unknown zone of Novello which lies on the confines of Monforte and Barolo. The Surì is entirely south facing and lies at 230 meters. It is named for the grandfather that started the Barbaresco vineyards. The vines are an average of 40 years old. The first vintage was the 1996.

Winemaker: Pietro Berutti
The two Pietro Beruttis, grandfather and grandson, are well known and respected in the Barbaresco area and have received much acclaim both nationally and internationally for their wines. The Berutti’s estate consists of 22 hectares (54 acres) divided between four vineyard sites: La Spinona 10 ha, L’Albina 2.5 ha, La Ghiga 5.5 ha and La Bergera 4 ha. Their best Barbaresco cru comes from the Faset vineyard area where Bruno Ceretto and Angelo Gaja also have important vineyard. Berutti owns the “Bricco” or crest of the Faset vineyard. Only the owner of these coveted hilltop vineyards can use the designations “Bricco”, “Bric” on the label. La Spinona uses only organic farming practices and is famous for their own production of natural fertilizer. They were one of the first Piedmont estates to obtain organic certification back in the 1980's.
Position, orientation, microclimate and tradition: these are the four factors that characterise our vineyards, all of which are in the municipality of Barbaresco (the Barolo vineyard is in the municipality of Novello).
Position: the plots are located in the best parts of the hills.
Orientation: from south-east to south-west, for maximum exposure to the sun.
Microclimate: the combination of natural elements enables us to obtain wines with unique fragrances. The soil yields Barbaresco, Nebbiolo and Barbera characterised by length, finesse and elegance. The Barolo is full-bodied and structured. Thanks to the microclimate influenced by the Tanaro river and the woods adjacent to the vineyards, the Dolcetto and Chardonnay are fresh, long-lived and have a distinct minerality.
Tradition: the cultivation of the vineyards and the soil is governed by respect for the environment. The use of natural fertilisers produced by our cattle breeding and a scrupulous choice of low-impact treatments are just two examples of how we care for nature. Vineyards and cascine (farmsteads), in keeping with the tradition of our land:
