Bastgen Berncastel-Cueser Weisenstein Riesling Spatlese Trocken
Weingut Bastgen
Germany - Mosel

In this south west facing vineyard Riesling vines are planted on bridle clay slate. The full day of sun exposure combined with the deep soils result in a powerful wine with layers of aromas, soft acidity and structure. Bright, clean, fresh and zesty. Grapefruit like flavors and minerality that is typical of the Riesling grape grown on blue slate soil. Round, rich and a very long finish.

Vinification
The grapes are strongly selected, only minimal amounts of botrytis are tolerated. At harvest the grapes are fully ripened, are gold in color and a soft acidity. In a 1000L used oak barrel the wine undergoes a natural fermentation until it reaches the dry stage. Due to the oak and regular bâtonnage during the lee aging the wine will show an unusual creamy character.

"This dry Mosel riesling is GG in all but name! Complex nose of white peach and red-fleshed vineyard peach with herb garden notes. Very elegant and polished this glides over your palate, the precision of flavor on the medium-bodied palate is very impressive. Then comes the wet stone and red berry finish that doesn’t want to stop. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold."

"A crush of smoke and slate accent rich white peach and grapefruit in this svelte, penetrating dry white. Pristine yet fleshy in fruit and backed by a revitalizing spine of acidity, it's a stately, immediately enjoyable wine likely to maintain peak through 2027. - ANNA LEE C. IIJIMA"

Flavors of white grapefruit and tart pineapple are juicy on the palate and linger long through a smoldering, smoky finish. Delightful now but should hold well through 2030. - ANNA LEE C. IIJIMA"

Ripe yellow peach and apple flavors are rich and penetrating, offset by brisk acidity and a sleek, stony finish. A hedonistic wine to enjoy now through 2030. - Anna Lee C. Iijima"
