Ossian Capitel is a pure expression of very old Verdejo vines - finesse, elegance and longevity. It is made in selected years with a selection of extraordinary grapes.
Old golden yellow color with greenish reflections. Intense yellow and white fruits, balsamic notes. Fresh, full and concentrated.
turkey flocks in mustard sauce, smoked tuna tartare and salmon.
"The 2020 Capitel is pure Verdejo from the oldest vines from the Peña Aguda vineyard in the village of Nieva on slate soils. This is the last vineyard to be bottled and has higher alcohol (14%) than the rest of the vineyards despite now harvesting earlier. The wine has a different aromatic profile but getting closer to the style of Ossian, less opulent than in the past, with more energy, quite fruit-driven with some exotic notes reminiscent of banana skin. The whole clusters were pressed and the juice put to ferment in barrel where the wine matured with the lees and, starting this year, without bâtonnage, because they feel the wines have enough volume and stirring the lees can bring more oxidation to the wine. 2,500 bottles produced. - Luis GUTIERREZ"

"Light, brilliant straw-gold. Powerful, mineral-accented citrus and orchard fruit aromas are complemented by building floral, iodine and fennel notes. Juicy and concentrated on the palate, offering sharply focused Meyer lemon, pear nectar, chamomile and honeysuckle flavors supported by a spine of smoky minerality. Smoothly blends depth and delicacy and finishes impressively long and minerally, with resonating pear and floral notes. Raised in French oak barrels, half of them new. - Josh Raynolds"

"Hailing from the Segovia section of Castilla y León, this barrel-fermented and oak-aged Verdejo opens with toasted aromas of wood grain and baked white fruits. A full and round palate is creamy but braced by core acidity. Honeyed melon, apple and vanilla flavors finish smooth and creamy. With 10 months of lees aging and grapes from 200-year-old bush vines, this wine has an elegant character. Drink through 2024. - MICHAEL SCHACHNER"

"The 2018 Capitel is pure Verdejo from an ancient plot in the village of Nieva (Peña Aguda, mentioned on the label) that is within the limits of Rueda but sold as Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León. It fermented in 228-liter oak barrels with indigenous yeasts, where it matured with the lees for 10 months, during which time the lees were periodically stirred (bâtonnage). That oxidative vinification and aging has produced an exuberant wine that is fully ripe, with creamy aromas and flavors and a soft texture. It's rich and seems to be evolving quite quickly. 3,000 bottles were filled in September 2019. - Luis Gutierrez"

"Ripe, toasty nose of dried mango, cooked lemon and praline with some dried flowers and herbs. It’s full-bodied, rich and buttery, yet zesty, with tangy acidity. Round and flavorful finish with lingering toast notes. From organically grown grapes. Drink now."

"Straight-up awesome stuff, the 100% Verdejo 2015 Verdejo Capitel comes from the older vines of the estate and was fermented and aged in four 228-liter and one 600-liter barrel. Thrilling notes of orchard fruits, white flowers, crushed rocks and toasted bread all flow to a full-bodied, concentrated white that has perfect balance, bright acidity, and a great, great finish. It knocks it out of the park on all accounts and is an incredible Verdejo that has both richness and elegance."

"Bright gold. Ripe orchard and tropical fruits and lemon curd on the highly fragrant, mineral-accented nose. Juicy and expansive on the palate, offering ripe pear, nectarine and mango flavors accompanied by hints of vanilla and honey. Finishes with powerful mineral lift, excellent persistence, and a sappy peach nectar quality. The blend of richness and vivacity displayed by this wine is awfully impressive. - Josh Raynolds"

"The top of the range here is produced with the oldest vines Ossian has, in the cold village of Nieva (Segovia) on slate soils at 900 meters altitude. The 2013 Capitel is truly different from all the rest of the wines I've tasted from the region; there are not that many vineyards on slate soils. There are some fine balsamic and creamy aromas over a core of yellow plums, Indian spices and wet stones (a touch of moss? freshly cut grass on wet stones?). The palate is powerful, with pungent flavors and a marked bitter note in the finish; it is very intense and almost piquant. It has the concentration, structure and acidity to develop nicely in bottle. Some 2,200 bottles were produced. - Luis Gutierrez"

"The 2012 Capitel is produced with the fruit of centenary, head-pruned, ungrafted Verdejo grapes grown in Nieva, in the province of Segovia. This is the cooler part of the Rueda appellation on a limited part of the village where the soils are rich in slate and the vineyards are located at nearly 900 meters altitude. As soon as you put your nose in the glass you know this wine is different, and I think the soil immediately makes it different from the rest of the wines from the region. It has a marked balsamic personality, with aromas of cedar wood, bay leaf, cigar ash and yellow fruit. The palate is powerful, shows good concentration, balance and acidity, if still a little marked by the oak, ending dry and with an austere, mineral sensation. I'd be interested to see how this wine ages. This is a powerful, concentrated Verdejo full of character. Drink now-2020. - Luis Gutierrez"

"The white peach and sliced apple aromas are enchanting. Full body, lots of fruit and a long and flavorful finish. Made from 100-year-old pre-phylloxera verdejo vines. Aged in 50% used and 50% new French oak barrels. Drink now. - James Suckling"

"(all verdejo, from ungrafted vines that are now reportedly more than a century old): Hazy yellow. Deeply pitched, smoky pear and peach pit aromas are brightened by gingery spices, a hint of quinine and dusty minerals. Intense orchard and pit fruit flavors stain the palate, picking up citrus zest and bitter pear skin qualities with air. Succulent herb and anise notes linger on the strikingly long, chewy, penetrating finish, which features suave leesy and mineral qualities."
