  • Week of 11/23/15 - Turkey Wines!

chakana estate selection malbec bottleGobble Gobble! In between wine shipments, we've been sharing family recipes and plans for our Thanksgiving feasts. Fran chimed in with his top wine picks for Turkey Day - Chakana Estate Malbec and Gambellara Soave.

With its light aromas of apple, almond, pear, Gambellara's Soave offers a pleasant, creamy texture in the mouth. This 100% Garganega is lightly flavored with an interesting acidity. The soil's volcanic origin gives a nice presence of mineral saltiness. A great choice for turkey.

Chakana Estate Malbec is deep an intense. This 90pt value has a "deep well of dark currant, kirsch and dried blueberry flavors interwoven with an intense spiciness. Shows a powerful structure, with a pure, fresh and minerally finish filled with loamy and dark chocolate notes." (Wine Spectator) It's begging to be paired with roasted meat or duck.

No matter your wine choice, all of us at Kysela wish our customers a very happy Thanksgiving!

  • Week of 6/29/15 - Vina Siegel 90pt Wines

siegel special reserve cabernet sauvignon hq bottleHot off the Press! Three of our selections from our favorite Chilean winery, Vina Siegel, just received 90 point ratings!

Vina Siegel's vineyards are located in the Colchagua Valley, the leading fine-wine producing region of Chile. Alberto Siegel grew his first vines here 30 years ago, and the family now has over 700 hectares planted from the Andean foothills to the coastal zone of the valley. One of Siegel's principal vineyards, Los Lingues, is in the foothills of the Andes Mountains, where the climate and soils give rise to highly structured wines with great body and color, smooth tannins of dry fruit and an exceptional balance.

Josh Raynolds of Vinous (formerly Tanzer/IWC) recently praised several wines from Vina Siegel, with these three receiving 90 point ratings:

2014 Siegel Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon "Uber Cuvee
"Opaque ruby. Heady, spice-accented cherry and dark berry scents show good clarity and gentle smokiness. Sappy and seamless on the palate, offering bitter cherry and cassis flavors that become sweeter with air. Shows very good energy and lift on the finish, which is firmed by supple, slow-building tannins."

2014 Siegel Special Reserve Sauvignon Blanc
"Green-tinged yellow. Incisive, high-pitched aromas of lime, pink grapefruit and quince are complemented by anise and candied ginger. Taut and sharply focused on the palate, offering vibrant citrus and orchard fruit flavors that deepen and spread out on the back half. The gingery note comes back on the long, nervy finish, which features a refreshing jolt of chalky minerals."

2013 Siegel Special Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon
Glass-staining ruby. Powerful aromas of cherry pit, cassis, pipe tobacco, violet and leather. Sweet and focused in the mouth, offering chewy red and black fruit flavors and a jolt of peppery spices. The spice and dark berry flavors carry through a long, smoky finish, which is shaped by dusty, late-arriving tannins.

  • Week of 8/24/15 - Rubus Pinot Noir, The Terraces Collection

rubus pn bkNew arrival! The newest addition to our Rubus family, The Terraces Collection Pinot Noir, is in the house!

Rubus is a private label created and used by Kysela Pere et Fils, LTD in order to buy, bottle and market wine found at an incredible quality/price ratio. Over the past few years it has become an international brand, encompassing wines from various continents, all of which are hand selected by Fran Kysela MS.
Rubus is a true representation of quality for the consumer at an excellent price.

This 100 % Pinot Noir from the Waipara Valley of New Zealand is made by Sherwood Estate winery. It's made from clone types D 113, D 777 & UCD 5 (Pommard Clone). The Pommard Clone is the most planted Pinot clone in Oregon and is often responsible for intense red or black fruit aromas. Rubus Pinot Noir has been aged in a selection of Sherwood's best barrels.

This Pinot Noir displays rich berry fruit and plum aromatics supported beautifully by oak complexity. The palate is full and round with texture and impressive length in the finish. It's great with red meats, such as hearty lamb, and full-flavored white meats.

Contact your Kysela Pere et Fils, LTD. sales representative, state distributor, or local retailer to order Rubus Pinot Noir!
  • Week of 9/14/15 - Maipe Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon

maipe cabsauv rsv btl2We've been seeing some exciting new arrivals here at Kysela over the past few months, but let's face it - the classics are hard to beat! One of our favorite wines from one of our favorite wineries is Chakana Winery's Maipe Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon

For starters, Maipe was the Lord of the Winds for the ancient Andean Indians. He is still called upon to clear the skies after heavy rain, or to temper the summer heat. Especially the heat wave over Kysela's warehouse this past week.

Maipe Reserve is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. 70% of the wine is aged 12 months in French oak barrels to fully reveal the character of the Andean terroir, and the remaining 30% is aged in concrete vats. Robert Parker of The Wine Advocate praised this value, saying "...this lush wine is a terrific value in Cabernet Sauvignon... It's deep ruby color is accompanied by uncomplicated notes of blackcurrants, licorice and a touch of vanilla. Medium-bodied, straightforward, delicious and surprisingly concentrated for a wine in this price range, it should drink well for 3-6 years. It is not easy to find Cabernet Sauvignon for under $25 a bottle at this quality level, but this 2013 delivers"

So while you're summoning Maipe, Lord of the Winds, to cool things down...enjoy a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve!

  • Week of 9/28/15 - Siegel Wines

siegel rsv 1234 hq bottleWe are ALL ABOUT CHILE this week at Kysela, and we are celebrating the accomplishments of our favorite Chilean winery, Siegel Wines.

The Siegel family's vineyards are located in the Colchagua Valley, the leading fine-wine producing region of Chile. Alberto Siegel grew his first vines here 30 years ago, and the family now has over 700 hectares planted from the Andean foothills to the coastal zone of the valley.

In 2010, a devastating earthquake struck Central Chile, and for the past 5 years, the Siegel family has been heavily investing in the improvement of their winery & vineyards. Not only have they rebuilt the winery, but they have also employed terroir specialist Pedro Parra to plant and enhance their vineyards. They are preparing to release their 2015 vintage, which they believe has produced some of the best wines ever!

    siegel wines

Siegel Wines represent great value for the price. Here are five of our favorites:

2014 Siegel Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon "Uber Cuvee
"Opaque ruby. Heady, spice-accented cherry and dark berry scents show good clarity and gentle smokiness. Sappy and seamless on the palate, offering bitter cherry and cassis flavors that become sweeter with air. Shows very good energy and lift on the finish, which is firmed by supple, slow-building tannins."
    Josh Raynolds, Vinous, 90pts

2013 Siegel Reserve Red Blend 1234
"Saturated ruby. Smoky aromas of dried cherry, cassis and game, with a peppery note adding lift. On the palate, bitter cherry and dark berry flavors are underscored by tangy acidity and complicated by smoked meat and succulent herb qualities. Gentle tannins shape the persistent, smoky finish."
    Josh Raynolds, Vinous, 88pts

     2014 Crucero Chardonnay
Attractive yellow color with pretty green tones. Its intense varietal character evokes ripe citrus fruits, with floral and honeyed tones along with well integrated wood. In the mouth it is rich, round and fruity with some creamy notes.

2013 Siegel Special Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon
"Glass-staining ruby. Powerful aromas of cherry pit, cassis, pipe tobacco, violet and leather. Sweet and focused in the mouth, offering chewy red and black fruit flavors and a jolt of peppery spices. The spice and dark berry flavors carry through a long, smoky finish, which is shaped by dusty, late-arriving tannins."
    Josh Raynolds, Vinous, 90pts

2013 Siegel Single Vineyard Los Lingues Cabernet Sauvignon
Viña Siegel Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is the result of the family's continuous search for quality wines that faithfully reflect the best of our terroir. This wine comes from selected grapes from the "Los Lingues" vineyard in Alto Colchagua, at the foothills of the Andes, where the influence of the Andean winds result in an elegant Cabernet Sauvignon with great concentration of ripe red fruits, cassis and chocolate, and a balanced, richly structured, and long finish.
"Interesting blackberry, black currant and tar aromas. Full body, round and velvety tannins and a savory finish. Drink or hold."
    James Suckling, 91 pts
