Wolfberger Alsace Grand Cru Rangen Pinot Gris
Wolfberger
France - Alsace

From the Rangen Grand Cru vineyards, located in Thann Le Vieux; the southernmost Grand Cru vineyard in Alsace. This Grand Cru owes its name to the terrain's extreme height variation - Rangen means 'slope' in old German. The steep hillside slopes reach 85% in some places, requiring that the harvest be done by abseiling or roping down.

Archives attest that the "Rangenwein", "the warmest and most violent wine in the country", was made here by monks from the ends of the 13th century. The vineyard totals 9 hectares, of which Wolfberger has 4. The upper part is planted with Riesling, the lower part with Pinot Gris.

Rich and delicate in the nose offering aromas of honey, ripe fruits and sweet spices, gingerbread. Long and ripe fruit flavors with apricot hints. Perfect for aging, the wine will reveal even more qualities after several years of cellaring.

wine enthusiast 93 pts"Smoky hints of both ripe and dried pear have a honeyed edge. The palate comes in with that same honeyed sweetness on a rather concentrated powerful palate. Both lemon notes and lovely phenolic grip give structure. The finish is medium sweet and long. - ANNE KREBIEHL MW."

Its botrytis complexity provides richness, while a firm line of minerality keeps the wine cool and focused, with the stamina to age."

wine enthusiast 90 pts"Earth and undergrowth flavors are woven through the rich pear tones which begin to shine with great, slightly sweet ripeness when exposed to a little air. The phenolic texture provides a counterpoint, supported by lemony freshness. Lovely balance. - Roger Voss"
