Wolfberger Alsace Grand Cru Rangen Riesling
Wolfberger
France - Alsace

From the Rangen Grand Cru vineyards, located in Thann Le Vieux; the southernmost Grand Cru vineyard in Alsace. This Grand Cru owes its name to the terrain's extreme height variation - Rangen means 'slope' in old German. The steep hillside slopes reach 85% in some places, requiring that the harvest be done by abseiling or roping down.

Archives attest that the "Rangenwein", "the warmest and most violent wine in the country", was made here by monks from the ends of the 13th century. The vineyard totals 9 hectares, of which Wolfberger has 4. The upper part is planted with Riesling, the lower part with Pinot Gris.

Riesling Rangen Grand Cru shows a lovely yellow pale color with a gold rim. It offers mineral, spicy and minty aromas with some eucalyptus notes, tropical fruits, grapefruit. Fresh, racy and well-balanced, exotic on the finish with long lasting flavors.

"Aromas shimmy out of the glass. An enticing haze of petrol is lifted by lime and grapefruit zest, as well as pineapple. The texture of this wind is smooth and heavy, but the acidity and citrus notes bring freshness and light. A long finish carries just a hint of menthol. - LAYLA SCHLACK"

There is depth of flavor that echoes with hints of peach and honey framed in vivid lemon freshness. The finish is long and dry. - ANNE KREBIEHL MW"

wine enthusiast 94 pts"Very ripe and juicy notes of yellow pear have a touch of lemon and an alluring pithy earthiness on the nose. The palate comes in with the same generous juiciness and an easy flow that is nonetheless full of vivid fruit of juicy pear and ripe orange. Underneath all of that is a firm fault line of freshness and a pithy zesty concentration. All the fruity ease plays over considerable power. The finish is lemon-dominated and dry. Drink now through 2030. - ANNE KREBIEHL MW"

wine enthusiast 93 pts"The scent of fresh fragrant orange peel has a totally honeyed edge on the nose. The palate, however, has a wonderfully clear and clean-cut green pear and lemon note that simply sings. There is concentration and poise but also a feeling that this might be far better with a few years of cellar age. The beautifully dry palate is concentrated and has impact but is not heavy; the finish is lip-smacking and vivid. It's lovely now but better later. Drink 2017–2030. - Roger Voss"

As potent and earthy as the flavors may be they finish clean, with enough cut to stand next to braised rabbit or other white-meat game."

There is wonderful, tingling concentration on the palate, given extra pizzazz by the bright, zesty acidity. Notes of stone and chalk peek through. The palate is dry and slender but concentrated and toned. The finish plays with delicious grapefruit notes. - Roger Voss"
