Ron Thorn Barossa Single Vineyard Shiraz
Thorn Clarke
Australia - South Australia - Barossa Valley

"My father, Ron, was born in 1923 at the Angaston Hospital not far from where the Thorn-Clarke Winery is currently located. He was the fourth born of the nine children my grandparents raised at Clifton Park in the Eden Valley Ranges. Dad's great-grandparents took up farming land in the Barossa in the 1840's and purchased Clifton Park, where Dad grew up, in the 1870's. To this day, Clifton Park remains in the Thorn family and the 1870's vineyard still produces quality fruit.

As the family grew, Dad showed tenacity and judgment by pulling out orchards and extending the family vineyards. During the 1950's, 60's, and 70's, times were testing for a family business based on dry land horticulture and mixed farming. Dad's strong work ethic proved an invaluable asset during the tough years on the farm and he traveled widely as a shearer, drove bulldozers and worked at the local cement works to support his family.

Slowly the tide turned, Australians began drinking more wine and Dad with his uncanny ability to select and plant Clifton Park with the grape varieties of the future, saw fortunes change for Clifton Park and the Thorn family. I loved my Dad's wry sense of humor and his work ethic was an inspiration to us all.

Ron Thorn Shiraz is made from the best fruit that we grow and is produced only in exceptional years. This wine is given the benefit of 20 months barrel maturation and 12 months in bottle prior to release. This is our tribute to Dad's life and his contribution to the Thorn-Clarke story."  - Cheryl Thorn Clarke

Deep red with a slight purple hue on release. The wine has a rich mix of dark chocolate infused with coffee bean and black liquorice, then scents of tar, aniseed, raw (pure) soy and black olive on the nose. The palate is expansive, and yet balanced and finessed. An amalgam of dark berried flavors and textural sensations. The 100% new oak is completely absorbed, meshed with ripe tannins, completing a palate of impressive length and youthfulness.

Vinification
After destemming, a Shiraz-specific yeast was selected to ferment the wine at a maximum of 28 degrees C. The fermenter was manually pumped over twice daily. Pump over regimes were adjusted toward the end of fermentation to suit the tannin and flavour extraction of the wine. The cap was completely broken up on each pump over. The wine remained in fermenters for 6-8 days before being pressed, inoculated with malolactic bacteria and filled to American oak (100% new). The wine was racked ML and returned to the same barrels. The wine was topped every month, and after 6months, racked and returned to the same barrels again. Prior to bottling the parcels were emptied from oak and blended. Minimal fining and filtration.

halliday logo"The best of the 40 batches of grapes vinified in the vintage, from Block 7 of the St Kitts Vineyard. Matured for 20 months in 100% new American oak, which combines with the tannins to thickly coat the mouth. Needs many years to soften the overall impact of the wine."

wine enthusiast 91 pts"This big-boned Barossa Shiraz lets its premium nature be known inside and out, from the heavy bottle to the lashings of polished oak billowing over masses of dark-berry fruit. Mint, chocolate and vanilla are there too and while there's plenty of flash here, there's also a good deal to like. The palate gets even more serious when plush silky fruit is gripped by vice-like tannins. This rich wine is made for the long haul so don't touch it yet. Drink 2021–2034. CHRISTINA PICKARD"

wa95"Yes, the 100% new oak shows on this bad boy, but the fruit is so massively concentrated that I don't see it being a problem. The 2015 Ron Thorn Single Vineyard Shiraz is a full-bodied, plush wine, with loads of baking spices, vanilla, boysenberry and cola. Long and dusty on the finish, this should be a long-lived wine. - Joe Czerwinski"

Faint menthol or dill notes and plenty of vanilla frame plum and mulberry fruit, while hints of green peppercorn and maple syrup add interest to the long finish. Drink now–2030. - Joe Czewinski"

vinous logo 250"Vivid purple. Heady, oak-accented cherry preserve, blackberry, cola and coconut scents are energized by a jolt of spicy cracked pepper. Alluringly sweet and  expansive, offering palate-staining dark fruit, spicecake and mocha flavors and a suave floral pastille nuance. Shows impressive vivacity for its brawn, and finishes very long, smooth and smoky, featuring repeating coconut and blue fruit character and harmonious tannins that come in late. - Josh Raynolds"

jhawc logo 250"Substantial wine in all respects. The Incredible Hulk in a glass, though a lot classier. Deep blackberry, boysenberry and coffee-cream flavour, a deep river of tannin, an aspect of brood but no lack of brightness either. It's a heavy-hitter but it's not just that; it's neat, it exercises its power both responsibly and with a form of precision, and it flies boldly through the finish as if there's not a shadow of a doubt that the future is a place where it belongs. - James Halliday"
