William Randell Cabernet Sauvignon
Thorn Clarke
Australia - South Australia - Eden Valley

The William Randell range of wines were created in honor of the family ancestor - the esteemed pioneer William Richard Randell (1824 - 1911). The wines are sourced solely from grapes grown on the family estate vineyards. Wines in this range are only made in exceptional vintages.

Deep, inky red in color. Lifted blackcurrant and blackberry on the nose with hints of eucalypt. The palate shows depth and power with generous pure Cabernet fruit and supple, long tannins. Balanced French oak adds some savory spice to the wine. Will age well for many years.

Vinification
Following harvest the fruit was crushed into a variety of small fermenters (4 to 6T in capacity). Fermentation was carried out at a warm temperature (25-28 degrees ). The ferments were manually pumped over to provide good control of tannin extraction. Each fermenter was treated as a separate parcel of wine and once dry was filled to French oak (40% new). Following malolactic fermentation the wines were racked and returned to the same oak. Parcels remained in barrel for an average of 18 months prior to blending. Only the best barrels from the multiple parcels were used to make the final blend. Once blended the wine was prepared for bottling.

halliday logo"Open-fermented in small fermenters, each treated separately and matured in French oak (40% new) for an average of 18 months. The best barrels went to make this wine, its fragrant bouquet opening proceedings. The medium to full-bodied palate rides on typical cabernet tannins that lengthen the palate and its core of blackcurrant fruit. - James Halliday"

wa"I tasted the 2016 William Randell Cabernet Sauvignon as a final blend, one month before bottling. Mint and cassis mark the nose, followed by a full-bodied, ripe wine that seemed creamy-textured and soft. For a Cabernet Sauvignon, it's awfully plush and easy to drink. - Joe Czerwinski"

wa93"The 2015 William Randell Cabernet Sauvignon is a single-vineyard, Eden Valley bottling with plenty of intensity and varietal character. Mint and cassis notes dominate, but there's a healthy portion of new French oak that shows as well, adding lovely notes of baking spices and vanilla. Full-bodied and velvety in texture, it still shows enough delineation and length to please purists. - Joe Czerwinski"

wine enthusiast"From the relatively cool climes of Eden Valley, this Cab leads with ripe red and black fruits, oak and earthy spices. The palate is powerful but not rich, gripped vice-like by muscular, slightly astringent tannins and crunchy red-berry fruit. The oak is out in full force here but this currently austere wine should continue to age until at least 2025. - CHRISTINA PICKARD"

vinous logo 250"(aged in new and used large French oak barrels) Inky ruby. Expressive, oak-accented dark berry, licorice and pipe tobacco aromas are complemented by vanilla and rose pastille qualities. Intense black currant and bitter cherry flavors show impressive depth and a smooth, supple personality. Clings with strong tenacity on the youthfully tannic finish, which leaves behind peppery spice and dark chocolate notes. - Josh Raynolds"

wa89"Medium garnet-purple colored, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon William Randell has a nose redolent of crushed black and red currants, mulberries and fresh plums with cedar, underbrush and dried herbs hints. The medium-bodied palate is taut and understated with lovely freshness and fine tannins supporting the uncomplicated red and black fruits, finishing with good persistence."

vinous logo 250"(aged for 16 months in new and used French oak hogsheads): Inky ruby. An exotically perfumed bouquet evokes fresh blackcurrant, cherry compote and pipe tobacco, with smoke and vanilla nuances adding complexity. Sappy and expansive on the palate, with vibrant dark fruit and floral pastille flavors showing liqueur-like depth and surprising vivacity. The gently tannic finish displays excellent focus, repeating spiciness and strong cling. - Josh Raynolds"

"Full crimson-purple; while quite soft overall, both in fruit and tannin terms, the wine is full-bodied and fleshy, with dark chocolate and licorice joining the blackcurrant fruit and cedary oak. 14% alc."

wine and spirits logo 250"This Estate-grown cabernet is the top selection from the Thorn-Clarke vineyards, aged in French Oak. It's a seamless red, incorporating substantial tannins into pure black currant cabernet fruit. The herbal and green_olive accents in the tannins add flavors depth, and the wine gains extraordinary lenght of fragrance with air. A rich wine that will age on its tannins rather than its freshness, this should be closing in on its peak in another three to five years"
