  • Featured Brewery - Escutcheon Brewing

escutcheon glassEscutcheon Brewing is making delicious and quality craft beer...and they're doing it right here in Winchester, VA!

In Spring 2015, Kysela began a partnership with our new hometown brewery. Escutcheon Brewing Co. was founded by John Hovermale and Art Major, two friends who really, really love good craft beer. John, a master brewer, began at the Siebel Institute in Illinois more than fifteen years ago and has worked for breweries in Vermont, Maryland and Mississippi. John's beer knowledge & experience combined with Art's successful entrepreneurial skills, along with both guys' passion and drive to create good beer, were the perfect ingredients to build Escutcheon Brewing Co. The marine industrial names, the design of their taproom and the company logo (a Plimsoll line) are all a nod to Art's time in the Merchant Marine.

Escutcheon began as a draft-only operation, but in 2016 they also began offering their flagship brews in cans. The brewery's core beers (and canned offerings) are:

    • Growler Kölsch - a twist on the classic Kölsch from Cologne, Growler Kölsch has a crisp malty flavor and subtle refreshing notes of German hops. It has the flavor of an ale but with a clean, refreshing lager finish (4.5% ABV).
    • Agonic Line Vienna Lager - this is a true-to-style Vienna Lager. Its malty aroma and sweetness are thanks to a combination of domestic and imported malts, with subtle bitterness from noble hop strikes in the kettle (5% ABV).
    • 4th and 1 Pilsner - a collaboration with Redskins Hall-of-Famer, Super Bowl MVP & friend of Art Major, John "Riggo" Riggins. A German-style Pilsner brewed with only classic pilsner ingredients (4.4%).

    Escutcheon's other draft offerings include:

    • Annealed Coffee Stout - heated up with a higher ABV and then slowly cold-infused with locally-roasted, ethically-sourced coffee beans from Winchester, VA's own Hopscotch Coffee. Midnight Wheat allows for a thick, frothy head and deep, dark color (6.5% ABV). escutcheon kegs
    • Blackstrake Stout - dark in color but surprisingly light on the palette, our stout is remarkably complex. Hints of chocolate and caramel with robust flavors of roasted malt (4.5% ABV).
    • Bowditch IPA - this American Pale Ale is well balanced by using U.S. malts and hops. The malted barley provides a caramel biscuity aroma and slightly sweet taste, while a combination of three different hops balance the flavor and aroma with smooth bitterness and hints of citrus and pine (5.3% ABV).
    • Double Hull IPA - this classic Double IPA has four varieties of West Coast hops, just the right amount of bitterness, and a tanker full of flavor (8.2% ABV).
    • Plimsoll IPA - Escutcheon's flagship IPA.ᅠᅠ Foreign and domestic malts build the backbone of this copper-colored elixir while copious additions of three hop varieties leave it with clean, crisp, citrusy aroma (6.7% ABV).
    • Reluctant Splice Gose - a salty, sour, aromatic & downright wacky experiment (5% ABV).
    • For St. Patty's Day - Kerlogue Irish Red Ale, a traditional red ale (6% ABV).
    • NEW! Cheerly Kriek Sour Cherry Ale (750ml bottles) - traditional Belgian-style Kriek. This sour lambic wheat beer was aged in oak sherry barrels for nearly a year before freshly harvested sour cherries were added for several months (6% ABV).

You can also find Esctucheon's beer at retailers, restaurants, bars and venues all over Virginia, Maryland & DC. Locals can also try Escutcheon brews (and fill a growler) at their taproom on West Commercial St.

  • Happy New Year!

    new year 2016

    Happy New Year!

We are preparing for a busy and exciting 2016 here at Kysela. Our annual Mondovino trade tastings are coming up next month, and we are going all out. A team just returned from France, where they previewed a phenomenal new vintage & discovered some great additions for our portfolio. Our wines and wineries are earning 90+ point ratings from top publications & winning international championships. The new year is off to a great start, and plan to keep this momentum going all year long.

So, do any of your resolutions involve wine? Are you planning to drink BETTER wine this year? Try varietals and regions that you've never heard of? Maybe you're going to drink a new craft beer everyday? Here's a list of some products we think you should try....you know, when you get back from the gym.

Albada Blanco Macabeo - from a 70 year old vineyard site. Cold fermented, which yields a peachy, Roussanne-like character. Fragrant, refreshing and clean.

Albada Garnacha - a field blend of Old Vine Garnacha (40-80 year old vines) with flavor components of black pepper, Rhone Valley spice, perfume and fruit. The Garnacha is reminiscent of Chateauneuf du Pape!

*These Albada wines are our top values right now!

Kloof Street Chenin Blanc - made by Mullineux Winery, Platter's 2016 Winery of the Year!  A blend from three parcels of old vines, this lush, lemony value is seriously dense and complex.

Dogfather Imperial Stout - the brew you can't refuse! Brewed with seven malts and four hops, and aged for 3-4 months in Heaven Hills Bourbon Barrels. Rich & chocolatey with subtle hop bitterness.

Leyenda Cream Sherry - perfect for staying warm. Dark mahogany color; dry fruits & hint of raisin on the nose; smooth and well rounded. This Cream sherry is a blend of Oloroso and Pedro Ximenez.

Burgo Viejo Rioja Crianza - classic old style Rioja. Red berry, juicy cherry, vanilla flavors. Structured and complex.

  • John Riggins 4th and 1 Pilsner

    4th and 1 can web

This brew gets its name from Redskins Hall-of-Famer John Riggins' famous game-changing 4th & 1 touchdown in 1983's Superbowl XVII. Riggins helped the Redskins earn their first Superbowl victory and was named the Superbowl MVP.

Riggins also helped the folks at Escutcheon Brewing craft this beer! It is, technically speaking, a German-style Pilsner. It's brewed with only classic pilsner ingredients: true-to-style 2-row pilsner and dextrin malts, and noble, old-world hops including German hops Perle & Tettnanger, and the Czech hop, Saaz. The water profile is dialed in to have specific characteristics of mineral-rich deep water wells found in Europe.

Enjoy this brew cold from the can or on tap at restaurants around the Virginia, Maryland & DC areas.

  • Kysela's Newest Craft Beer Brewer - Backroom Brewery

billie clifton brb 2Backroom Brewery is a boutique farm brewery nestled in the heart of the Shenandoah River Valley, owned by Billie Clifton. Billie's business began as an herb farm where she should grow culinary and medicinal herbs for the garden center trade. Today the herb farm, Sunflower Cottage, grows 120,000 potted herb plants each spring from seeds and cuttings to sell to other garden centers and to our own customers.

In the fall of 2012, they added a new field of herbs - hops. In 2013, they began the process of creating a local ordinance to accommodate farm breweries. By late spring, the process was complete and Backroom Brewery became the first farm brewery in the Northern Shenandoah Valley.

The first hop harvest in August of 2013 was bountiful. They were brewing in small batches and planning the brewery construction. In the spring of 2014, they began construction and by July 2014 they had finished their brewery building plus equipment installation.

Now Backroom Brewery has over 20 beer recipes approved for sales in Virginia. Billie's tasting room stays packed with folks who enjoy her award-winning beer and food prepared with her own fresh herbs and farm-grown produce. Backroom Brewery took home 3 first place awards plus a Best of Show in the 2016 Virginia Craft Beer Cup awards.

Kysela is excited to distribute their beers in the state of Virginia. They offer 1/4 & 1/6 barrel kegs in the following flavors: Bay Nut Brown Ale, Chili Pepper Red Ale, Cilantro Lime Wheat Beer, Citra Golden Hop Surprise IPA, Helltown Red IPA, Hop Harvest Party Ale, Lemon Basil Wheat Beer, Oatmeal Stout, Peter Peter Pumpkin Drinker Porter & Reliance Road Red Ale.

  • Week of 10/19/15 - Selkirk Abbey Guilt Belgian Coffee Porter

selkirk guilt bottleDespite its name, we promise you'll have no regrets after trying Selkirk Abbey's Guilt Belgian Coffee Porter

    About the Brewery
Earlier this year, the folks at Thrillist set out to find the best craft brewery in every state...and in Idaho, they found Selkirk Abbey. Here's why they say they're the best in the state:
"Rural northern Idaho might just be the furthest thing from Belgium, what with all the truck nuts and tin cans, which makes Selkirk Abbey all the more special. This is a place that takes its Belgian influence beyond aesthetics, brewing its wares on open-fire systems of the oldest-school variety. But none of that means a thing if the beers don’t hold up. Thankfully, mainstays like the Chapel Witbier and Deacon Belgian Pale and seasonals including remarkable saisons and Scottish ales take the Belgian influence well beyond imitation and into the realm of greatness."

    About the Beer
For starters, this tasty treat (and winner of Selkirk's 2013 Home Brew Contest) is brewed with fresh beans from Selkirk's neighbor, DOMA Coffee Roasting Company. Dark mahogany brown, medium bodied with nice creaminess & great roast at the end. The coffee in this brew is both subtle and evident - its smooth with hints of spice & mocha, but the coffee is not overdone.

    ABV: 8.3%
    IBU: 45
    Special Ingredients: DOMA coffee

  • Week of 11/9/15 - Perennial Regalia Brett Saison

perennial regalia labelInspired by the rustic farmhouse-style Saisons of Southern Belgium, this week's feature - Perennial's Regalia Brett Saison - is sturdy, complex and aged to perfection!

    About the Brewery
The Perennial philosophy is to brew beer with the adventurous craft beer drinker in mind. Founders Phil & Emily Wymore & their crew focus on small, hand-crafted batches of beer & use local, seasonal and organic ingredients as much as possible. Their brews are influenced mostly by Belgian and American craft styles, but the addition of premium ingredients such as fruits, spices or wild yeast strains sometimes causes the beers to defy traditional categories.

Perennial also has a barrel aging program that features beers aged in wine and spirits barrels, ranging from a Rye barrel-aged Mexican Chocolate Stout to a wild yeast fermented Saison aged on Missouri wine grapes in French oak wine barrels. Brewmaster Phil strives to achieve balance with each of the recipes, making Perennial beers exceptional with food.

    About the Beer
This one happens to be a favorite of Ben, our craft beer manager & resident beer enthusiast. It's made with a specific strain of Brett yeast called Brettanomyces Anomala, which actually gives off tropical fruit flavors as it ages, rather than the traditional sour, earthy, barnyard-like flavors. 8.5% ABV & aged to perfection. Enjoy!

  • Week of 12/28/15 - Monocacy Brewing Co.

monocacy caseHappy New Year to us! One of Kysela's most exciting changes for 2016 in our craft beer segment is the addition of Monocacy Brewing Co. to our Maryland portfolio.

We started working with this terrific local brewery in 2014, but only in DC. This year we added Virginia to our sales territory, and now we are excited to add Maryland as of January 1st. Monocacy is based in MD, and up until now, they self-distributed in their home state. Now they have increased their production drastically and are ready for the next level. We are happy to be a part of their growth!

Monocacy's portfolio consists of 3 solid offerings:

Riot Rye Pale Ale - a ruckus of complex flavor is carried in on the amber glow of torchlight. As tension builds between hop bitterness and the malty tones delivered by locally grown and malted grist, a perfect balance is achieved. The robust texture of rye allies itself with the flavors from specialty malts and hops to rebel against preconceived notions of beer. Unseat the crown. Start a Riot.

HL Rex Session Pale Ale - as one king falls, another takes his throne. The aromatic reign of Humulus Lupulus (hops) is supported in every sip by resounding and victorious malt flavors. Unlike the intense and aggressive monuments to the prior Rex, this veritable Hop King is upheld by a delightfully textured throne and serves as a beacon to those seeking a balance worthy of prolonged sessions. Raise A Glass. All Hail HL Rex.

Brewtus Coffee Stout - from the shadows of a dark and opulent curtain spring the robust aromas of locally roasted coffee and hardy malt. Deep-seated hop bitterness rallies with these conspirators, delivering a well-balanced thrust of assertive flavor to a bland tyrant. Raise a glass in celebration of liberating taste. Et tu, Brewte?se conspirators, delivering a well-balanced thrust of assertive flavor to a bland tyrant. Raise a glass in celebration of liberating taste.

  • Week of 4/20/15 - Sneaky Pete Imperial IPA

laughing dog sneaky pete hq bottle Here's something to celebrate - we just got a fresh batch of our house beer, Sneaky Pete Imperial IPA!

In 2011, when Kysela's craft beer business was really starting to take off, they decided to create their own "house" label & brew. Fran Kysela worked with Fred Colby of Laughing Dog Brewing to introduce Sneaky Pete - a complex, rich, flavorful Imperial IPA. It started as a limited selection for spring & summer, but after quickly rising to the top and gaining fans all over the country (it's a got a 97 overall rating on ratebeer.com!), we had to start making it year round!

Sneaky Pete is slightly re-formulated each year, with an eye toward improving an already great beer. This year's brew received an extended dry hopping, which yielded a huge hit of citrus notes up front. It has a copious aroma of white grapefruit, citrus overtones, a complex rich middle and long flavors in the finish. To top it off, its finished with wild clover honey. This beer is a true beauty!

The beer brewing torch has been passed down, and now it’s our turn. To make the kind of beer you can enjoy all day long, if you’re so inclined. And we have to admit, sometimes we are very, very inclined."

We're glad to partner with Susquehanna, and we're excited to add a Shandy to our portfolio. The Shady Spot Lemon Shandy is brewed the traditional, dry, English-style way. The mingling of beer and lemonade is the perfect refreshing harmony for a hot summer's day.  4.7 ABV & 9 IBU's.

In 2011, when Kysela's craft beer business was really starting to take off, we decided to create our own "house" label & brew.

  • Week of 8/17/15 - Escutcheon Agonic Line Vienna Lager

agonic line lager glassThis week's feature is sure to point you in the right direction - its the Agonic Line Vienna Lager from our local brewery, Escutcheon!

Before we talk beer, let's talk navigation (the kids around here are back in school today, so why not?). Back before we used our GPS to get around, people used maps & compasses. The needle on a compass is influenced by the earth’s magnetic field, which causes it to line up with magnetic north. Maps, on the other hand, are typically oriented to the North Pole, which is truth north. These two norths aren't always the same, and you have to account for the difference between the two (or the declination) when you're using your compass alongside your map. There are, however, some places where the two norths ARE the same, such as in the middle of Mississippi. That imaginary line where true north & magnetic north are the same is called the Agonic Line

So when our friends at Escutcheon crafted a beer that was incredibly smooth and unwavering, they aptly named it after the Agonic Line. This is a true-to-style Vienna Lager that has a perfect combination of ingredients. Malty aroma and sweetness are achieved with a combination of domestic and imported malts, with subtle bitterness from noble hop strikes in the kettle. This one will steer you in the right direction every time!
    5% ABV & 22 IBU's
Hallertauer and Tettnanger hops; Pilsner, Vienna and Munich malts.

  • Week of 8/24/15 - Selkirk Abbey Infidel Belgian IPA

selkirk infidel bottleThis week's feature is from a small brewery making big-style Belgian beers. Try Selkirk Abbey's Infidel Belgian Style IPA!

The folks at Thrillist just set out to find the best craft brewery in every state...and in Idaho, they found Selkirk Abbey.

These folks know how to brew, and it shows in the Infidel Belgian Style IPA. Rejecting traditional brewing dogma, the Infidel challenges the notion of beers fitting neatly into established style guidelines. The assertive, citrus hoppiness of an American IPA unites with the traditional spicy notes of a belgian-style pale ale to create a bold, beautiful, palate-pleasing brew. 8.2% ABV; 84 IBU's. And did we mention a 96 overall rating on ratebeer.com?

  • Week of 9/7/15 - Purebred Sinle Hop Citra APA

laughing dog pure bred citra abelThis week's special is a true bone-a-fide brew - it's Purebred Citra APA from the good folks at Laughing Dog Brewing.

With all the hops available to beer drinkers these days, sometimes its nice to get back to basics and taste how a single hop can flavor a beer. Fred Colby, Brewmaster at Laughing Dog Brewing & true master of Hops, has created a single hop series to do just.

Purebred American Pale Ale showcases Citra, which has a soft bitterness that yields an extremely drinkable beer. Juicy, bright citrus notes are presented on a clean, light malt backbone. At 6.1% ABV & 68 IBU's, this is another win for Laughing Dog.
