Kasteelberg Shiraz
Riebeek Cellars
South Africa - Western Cape - Coastal Region - Swartland

The Kasteelberg range of wines celebrates the discovery of the Riebeek Valley and the Kasteelberg mountains in 1661. Kasteelberg stands sentinel over the fertile valley below. From the slopes of the mountains, hand-selected grapes are expertly crafted with care to produce rare and expressive wines.

The Swartland terroir is home to rich, nuanced, silky Shiraz, and the Kasteelberg Shiraz is no exception. Rich black fruit, liquorice and hints of spice charms the nose. The palate follows through with black currents and complex baking spice. Full-bodied and rich, the velvety tannin structure offers a long, well-integrated finish.

Coastal Region - Swartland
Wine Type
100% Shiraz
Agricultural Practices
Grapes are hand-sorted and crushed into an open fermenter with up to 30% whole bunch fermentation. Cold maceration lasts for 2 – 3 days for colour and soft, supple tannin extraction. Wild yeast fermentation lasts 7 – 8 days while being closely temperature controlled to stay below 25 - 26 °C with regular hand punch-downs. After fermentation, the wine is left on the skins for 7 – 8 days, for further tannin development followed by malolactic fermentation also on the skins. Using a traditional basket press, the wine is pressed into 300L new French oak barrels. After 16 months of maturation in the barrels, the wine is racked, filtered and bottled. After bottling the wine is further bottle-matured for at least 6 months before release.

Serve at room temperature. The perfect companion to barbequed lamb, fillet medallions and game. Lovely with Springbok stuffed with bacon, garlic and rosemary and a great match to a cheese and preserve platter.

2018 Kasteelberg Shiraz - 92 PTS - TA

tim atkin logo 250"I'd expect to prefer the 2017 Shiraz to the 2018 bottling, but it's actually the reverse. Maybe Alecia Boshoff has just got more experience with the fruit from this Kasteelberg site. Sweet and spicy, with enticing incense and violet aromas, fine tannins, succulent red berry fruit and deftly integrated one-third new oak. 2021-26"

tim atkin logo 250"One of two Shirazes that are currently on the market from Alecia Boshoff, this comes from schist-based soils in the foothills of the Kasteelberg. Floral and intense, as wines from this side of the Swartland tend to be, it's elegant and spicy, with a hint of meaty reduction and supporting, fine-grained tannins. 2022-27"

"This is a friendly, attractive and easy to like bottling. It boasts solid fruit concentration, expressed in waves of raspberry sauce, brambly boysenberry and just a touch of dark chocolate. The medium-weight palate shows a bit more restraint, with herbal tones of raspberry leaf and cherry stem. Drink now–2020."
