Château Mazane Vacqueyras
Alain Jaume ( Grand Veneur )
France - Rhone Valley - Vacqueyras AOC

This 50 year old single vineyard (22 Acres) consists of three main varieties with a predominance of Grenache. It stretches over the 'Garrigues' (scrubland) plateau that is ideally located between the Ouvèze (tributary of the Rhone river) terraces and the Dentelles de Montmirail.

Chateau Mazane Vacqueyras Rouge is medium-bodied, pure and elegant. It offers plenty of plum, blueberry, spring flowers and peppery notes. On the palate, the richness of the tannins harmonizes with the smoothiness of the wine. The finish is long, with spice aromas and licorice. Beautifully textured, enjoy it over the coming 6-7 years.

jeb dunnuck logo 250"The 2020 Vacqueyras Château Mazane is terrific and well worth seeking out. Based on 60% Grenache, 25% Syrah, and the rest Mourvèdre, this medium-bodied, supple, elegant Vacqueyras has lots of red and black fruits, complex notes of peppery garrigue, sandalwood, and spice, polished tannins, and a great finish. Drink this beauty over the coming 7-8 years or so."

Then comes an impressive interplay of fine tannins and mineral freshness on the well-structured and concentrated palate. Long and uplifting, herbal finish. Drink or hold."

jeb dunnuck logo 250I loved the 2019 Vacqueyras Château Mazane. This ripe, sexy, full-bodied powerhouse has loads of darker berry fruits as well as notes of Provençal garrigue, sandalwood, and spice. With moderate acidity, wonderful tannins, and a great finish, it’s one heck of a great value. Drink it over the coming decade. The blend is 60% Grenache, 25% Syrah, and the rest Mourvèdre."

jeb dunnuck logo 250"Based on 60% Grenache, 30% Syrah, and the rest Mourvèdre, the 2018 Vacqueyras Chateau Mazane shows a slightly more modern vibe (it’s aged in tank and barrel) in its rocking red and blue fruits, graphite, smoked earth, and peppery garrigue aromas and flavors. With medium to full-bodied richness, a round, supple mouthfeel, and plenty of underlying structure, it’s a seriously good 2018 Vacqueyras that will have 8-10 years of ultimate longevity."

jeb dunnuck logo 250"Similarly colored, the 2018 Vacqueyras Château Mazane offers a more focused, firm, structured style. While I normally prefer the Grande Garrigue cuvée, this might be a step up in 2018, and it certainly shows more structure and length. A blend of 60% Grenache, 30% Syrah, and 10% Mourvèdre, brought up in tanks and barrels, it’s going to be one of the gems in 2018."

"While the nose is smoky and restrained, this plummy, pristinely fruity red offers loads of sun-kissed black cherry and plum flavors edged by a stony, mineral undertone. A blend of 60% Grenache, 30% Syrah and 10% Mourvèdre, it's an immediately approachable but elegant wine. The finish lingers on fine, feathery tannins. - ANNA LEE C. IIJIMA"

It stays straight and focused on the palate, with plenty of concentration and structure, and is going to keep for 8-10 years."

jeb dunnuck logo 250"Slightly lighter on its feet, with more red fruits, cassis, garrigue, spice, and subtle minerality, the 2016 Vacqueyras Chateau Mazane stays incredibly light and graceful on the palate and has incredible class. Nuanced, elegant and lightly textured, yet brilliantly concentrated and full-bodied, it's another undeniably delicious, seriously good wine from this estate. The blend is 60% Syrah, 30% Syrah and the rest Mourvèdre and it has a decade of terrific drinking ahead of it."

wa90"Unlike the 2015, the 2016 Vacqueyras Chateau Mazane skirts the very edge of over-ripeness. It does show lovely floral garrigue notes, but the fruit is also plummy and, at times, veers into the realm of warm chocolate fudge. Full-bodied and richly concentrated, I'd still opt to drink this over the near term. - Joe Czerwinski"

Fleshy black and red fruit flavors are concentrated and plush but elegantly restrained, balanced by fresh acidity. It's a voluptuous but well-integrated wine, marked by raspy, firm tannins that should melt over the next 3–5 years. - Anna Lee C. Iijima"

wa300"From a newly purchased estate in Vacqueyras, the Jaume 2015 Vacqueyras Chateau Mazane is similar to the Grande Garrigue, yet has a touch more concentration and purity, and a more focused, streamlined feel on the palate. Asian spices, pepper, lavender, plums and blackberry jam all emerge from this layered, gorgeous red that’s packed with Southern Rhone charm. I prefer the sexiness of the Grande Garrigue a touch more, but both of these 2015 tank samples are beautiful. - Jeb Dunnuck"

Sweet and broad in the mouth, offering intense boysenberry and cherry flavors and a good whack of peppery spices. Closes on a chewy note, with building tannins and a lingering note of candied licorice. In a brawny style and built for cellaring, or so it appears at this stage. - Josh Raynolds"
