Grand Veneur Chateauneuf-du-Pape Rouge Les Origines
Alain Jaume ( Grand Veneur )
France - Rhone Valley - Chateauneuf du Pape AOC

Deep and brilliant, purple-red colour. An exciting nose with aromas of black fruit (blackcurrant, cherry) spices and vanilla. This great aromatic complexity is found on the palate : the spices and ripe fruit appear with an elegant woodiness and harmonious tannins. The finish has good aromatic length and introduces a touch of liquorice and pepper.
A terrific Chateauneuf du Pape with great concentration and finesse.

Best between 2 and 20 years. Best to decant if young (less than 5 years old).

The first vintage for this wine was 1997.

jeb dunnuck logo 250"The 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Origines takes things up a notch on the serious scale and has a much more concentrated, focused, structured style. A blend of 50% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre, and the rest Syrah that saw 50% new barrels, it offers a rich, concentrated, focused texture, notes of black raspberries, roasted garrigue, pepper, and tons of minerality, building tannins, and outstanding length. The new oak is beautifully integrated, it’s perfectly balanced, and it’s one of those wines that has a kiss of modern character yet stays firmly planted in the Southern Rhône."

wa"The 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape les Origines is richer and denser than the entry-level bottling, layering hints of chocolate over black cherries, plums and purple raspberries. A blend of 50% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre and 20% Syrah, half was aged in new barriques, while the other half stayed in concrete tanks. It's nearly over the top, being full-bodied, rich and velvety, with a long, plush finish and never-ending waves of flavor on the finish. Tasted twice (once blind), with consistent notes. - Joe Czerwinski"

jeb dunnuck logo 250"Also brilliant, the 2017 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Origines (50% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre, and 20% Syrah brought up in 50% new barrels) boasts a deep purple color as well as loads of dark fruits, licorice, graphite, and building minerality. It’s full-bodied and concentrated, with stunning purity of fruit. It’s similar in style to the 2016 and is going to drink nicely in its youth as well.

"There are few better run estates in the world than that of the Jaume Family’s Domaine Grand Veneur. Located in the northern part of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and run today by brothers Christophe and Sebastien Jaume, the estate produces a quasi-modern style of Châteauneuf-du-Pape (their Les Origins and Vieilles Vignes) as well as a growing number of negociant based wines from throughout the Southern Rhône. The 2017s whites are terrific across the board, and this vintage has produced charming, pure wines that are already drinking beautifully. The 2016 reds are some of the finest I’ve tasted from this estate."

wine enthusiast 97 pts"Crisp black fruit and dried lavender are restrained on the nose but gain richness and ripeness on the palate of this buoyant red. It's laden with plum and cherry flavors yet silky in mouthfeel, freshened by a crush of minerality. Firm, densely packed tannins offer a noble frame and should integrate better from 2021. This wine has vast potential for aging, likely far beyond 2030. - Anna Lee C. Iijima"

Deep, rich and intense yet sleek and plush, it's a blend of 50% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre and 20% Syrah aged in vats (for the Grenache) and barrels (for the other varieties). It should drink well for over a decade. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. - Joe Czerwinski"

jeb dunnuck logo 250"The 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Origines is 50% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre, and the rest Syrah, all brought up in 50% new oak. It offers a deep ruby/plum color to go with terrific notes of blackberries, currants, smoked earth, and spiced meats. This cuvée shows some oak, but it's beautifully interwoven with its fruit, and it has a rich, full mid-palate and a great finish. This awesome wine will benefit from short-term cellaring and keep for 15+ years.

A lingering ganache echo adds more base through the hefty finish. Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah. Best from 2022 through 2035. 8,000 cases made, 350 cases imported. –JM"

Juicy and expansive on the palate, offering intense raspberry, cherry and spicecake flavors and a suggestion of candied lavender. Shows impressive energy for its heft and betrays no rough edges. Finishes sweet, broad and gently tannic, displaying impressive red-fruit-driven persistence. - Josh Raynolds"

wa95"Half of the fabulous 2015 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee les Origines was aged in new barriques, the rest in concrete vats, so there is some oak in play here, but the blend of 50% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre and 20% Syrah has absorbed much of it. This full-bodied wine is tannic and rich, with fruit shading from cherries and red plums all the way through to plum and cola. Mocha and baking spices appear on the long, velvety finish. wine enthusiast 94 pts"Despite the ripeness and plump, rounded palate, there's subtlety and restraint in the black cherry and berry flavors here. With its deeply integrated acidity and alcohol, it's a nuanced, concentrated red shaded by hints of nut and toast. Ripe but firm, penetrating tannins grip the long, savory finish. Hold until 2021 and enjoy for decades to come."

Cured meats, ripe red and black fruits, garrigue, and graphite notes all emerge from this balanced, structured wine that has beautiful purity and length. It’s a medium to full-bodied, nicely concentrated and balanced red that has notes of mulled blackberries, garrigue, baking spice and licorice. As with the 2015s, the oak here is more dialed in and integrated. It should keep through 2025. - Jeb Dunnuck"

wine and spirits logo 250"Alain Jaume and his children, Sébastien, Christophe and Hélène, grow this wine in a stony, red-clay parcel on the northern high plateau, near Beaucastel. It seems to channel the cooler clime in the tightness of its fruit, as red and firm as a barely ripe Bing cherry; in the taut energy of its acidity; in the floral fillips that give it grace. At the same time, there’s a dark and earthy side, grippy tannins slowly drawing out the meatiness of its concentration. Nearly half grenache, fermented in cement, the rest mourvèdre and syrah (30 and 20 percent, respectively) fermented in oak, it feels like a wine with a clear story to tell. Give it a half-dozen years in the cellar to relax; then pull it out for a winter evening."

wa"One of the top wines of the vintage, the 2013 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée Les Origines bucks the vintage stereotype and has fabulous richness and depth in its ripe black raspberry, creamy licorice, white chocolate and pepper-laced aromas and flavors. Full-bodied, elegant and balanced, it should benefit from short-term cellaring and have 10-15 years of longevity. Due to the difficulty with Grenache, the blend here has been tweaked, with just 45% Grenache in the blend, and the rest 35% Syrah and 20% Mourvedre. All of which will see 16 months in a combination of concrete tank and barrel. - Jeb Dunnuck"

Lush and creamy in texture, offering appealingly sweet red berry preserve and lavender pastille flavors and a spicy jolt of white pepper. A smoky quality comes up on the persistent finish, which features darker fruit character and chewy tannins.- Josh Raynolds"
