Grand Veneur Cotes du Rhone Rouge Les Champauvins
Alain Jaume ( Grand Veneur )
France - Rhone Valley - Cotes du Rhone AOC

“Les Champauvins” stretches on 34 ha classified in Côtes du Rhône. The plots are located in the northern border of Châteauneuf du Pape, exactly from 3 meters outside the appellation. It is located in the lieux dits of "Champauvins" and "Coudoulet". A small lane of rocks going through the rocky plateaux has been decided to be the AOC limit in 1936. Here, soils are made of red clay and rocks (pebbled stones of quartz). The quantity of rocks can be amazing as they can completely cover the soil. In summer and during the day, the rocks temperature will increase to 55°C. This accumulated heat will be get back to the vines during nights. Day after day, this unique phenomenon allow the grapes to reach a perfect maturity and produce a unique wine.

Intense, brilliant garnet-red color. It reveals lovely fruit, loads of body and a heady bouquet of ground peppers, raspberries cherry liqueur, currants, and spice box. Full-bodied and dense; rich and elegant - it tastes more like a "baby Châteauneuf" than a Côtes du Rhône.

Medium-bodied, silky, elegant, and fabulous texture, it's another winner to seek out and enjoy over the coming 4-5 years."

jeb dunnuck logo 250"One of the finest vintages of this cuvée to date, the 2016 Côtes du Rhône Les Champauvins (70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 10% Mourvèdre) is a brilliant, sexy, medium to full-bodied Côtes du Rhône that offers a spectacular bouquet of garrigue, peppery herbs, pine, and sweet red and black fruits. With beautiful complexity, a layered, seamless texture, notable tannins, and a great finish, it easily competes with any number of more expensive Châteauneuf-du-Papes and Gigondas. It’s great today yet will keep for 7-8 years."

wa92"Now that it's in the bottle, the 2016 Cotes du Rhone les Champauvins is looking as good as I predicted last year. It's a full-bodied, concentrated wine that could mop the floor with many Châteauneufs. Rich black cherry fruit is joined by complex herb and spice notes, a creamy mid-palate and a lingering finish. Worth buying by the case. - Joe Czerwinski"

wa300"Deeper in color than the Cotes du Rhone Reserve, the 2015 Cotes du Rhone les Champauvins is a solid step up, with fabulously complex notes of Bing cherry, blueberries, raspberries, spring flowers and pepper all emerging from the glass. Medium to full-bodied, rich and beautifully textured, it tastes more like a Chateauneuf du Pape than a Cotes du Rhone. Drink it anytime over the coming 4-5 years. - Jeb Dunnuck"

It's full bodied and bold in alcohol but exceptionally well integrated. Fresh acidity and fine grained, grippy tannins linger elegantly on the finish. Enjoy now–2021."

wine enthusiast 91 pts"This Côtes du Rhône, from a plot of vines located just outside Châteauneuf-du-Pape, is a terrific achievement in a challenging vintage. Hints of garrigue, black olive and cocoa add nuance to the ample black cherry fruit, while the finish of this full-bodied wine shows enough grip and astringency to warrant short-term cellaring. Drink 2019–2025. - Joe Czerwinski"

wa300"What looks to be a beautiful Côtes du Rhône (which should be no surprise coming from this estate), the 2014 Côtes du Rhône Les Champauvins checks in as a blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Mourvedre, from rolled pebble soils, that was aged 70% in stainless steel (Grenache) and 30% in barrel (Syrah and Mourvedre.) Giving up lots of roasted Provençal herbs, garrigue, pepper and currant-like fruit, it is medium to full-bodied, ripe and nicely textured, with impressive purity of fruit. It has outstanding potential and will have a decade of overall longevity. - Jeb Dunnuck"

wa89"The 2013 Côtes du Rhône Les Champauvins continues to impress, and for a difficult vintage, it has tons of charm. Offering lots of earthy black cherry and blackcurrant fruit, underbrush and loam earth, it’s medium-bodied, nicely textured and has solid length. Made from 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Mourvedre that had the Grenache aged in stainless steel and the Syrah and Mourvedre in barrel, drink it anytime over the coming 5-7 years. - Jeb Dunnuck"

"wa90One of my favorite estates in Châteauneuf du Pape (an area now being brilliantly covered by my colleague Jeb Dunnuck), Domaine Grand Veneur is internationally recognized for their fabulous Châteauneuf du Papes, but they also produce some terrific values. The estate wines are sold under the Grand Veneur label, but they have also started a négociant business under the name Alain Jaume. Those wines have been very promising as well.
A knock-out value is the estate 2012 Côtes du Rhône Les Champauvins, a blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Mourvèdre. Always one of the vintage's finest Côtes du Rhônes, it comes from a large, morsellated estate property north of Châteauneuf du Pape. At this quality level, it is amazing that the Jaume family produces nearly 10,000 cases. The 2012, from a far superior vintage than 2013, boasts a dark ruby/plum color as well as a sweet perfume of kirsch, lavender, new saddle leather, pepper, blackcurrants and licorice. Medium-bodied with lovely density and richness, light tannin and a savory mouthfeel, this beauty can be enjoyed over the next 3-4 years. - Robert Parker"

Medium to full-bodied, rich and balanced, it should drink nicely for 7-8 years. Drink now-2020. -JD"
