Grand Veneur Chateauneuf-du-Pape Rouge Vieilles Vignes
Alain Jaume ( Grand Veneur )
France - Rhone Valley - Chateauneuf du Pape AOC

It boasts an inky/purple color in addition to a gorgeous perfume of crushed rocks, jammy black fruits, charcoal and graphite, blackberry aromas. The palate holds excellent fruit character and has a great kick. The tannins are round and the finish is long with mint and dark fruit notes. It is all very much together and harmonious, and has great aging potential.
An outstanding Chateauneuf du Pape expressing the quintessence of its terroir.

The first vintage for this wine was 2006.

jeb dunnuck logo 250"The 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape Vieilles Vignes is a bigger, richer, more opulent wine. Beautiful notes of blackcurrants, scorched earth, graphite, and crushed violets, all flow to a full-bodied, Châteauneuf Du Pape that has a voluptuous, sexy texture, brilliant depth of fruit, fine tannins, and a purity of fruit that's hard to find in this vintage. It's a thrill a minute, and while it's approachable today, it will keep for 15-20 years. 416 cases."

jeb dunnuck logo 250"The flagship is the 2017 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes, a slightly heavy Mourvèdre blend of 45% each of Mourvèdre and Grenache, with 10% Syrah. Aged 16 months in 55% new French oak (the balance is in concrete), this deep, rich, full-bodied beauty boasts killer notes of black and blue fruits, graphite, charred meats, and crushed rocks. It’s straight, focused, and concentrated on the palate, with great, great intensity.

There are few better run estates in the world than that of the Jaume Family’s Domaine Grand Veneur. Located in the northern part of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and run today by brothers Christophe and Sebastien Jaume, the estate produces a quasi-modern style of Châteauneuf-du-Pape (their Les Origins and Vieilles Vignes) as well as a growing number of negociant based wines from throughout the Southern Rhône. The 2017s whites are terrific across the board, and this vintage has produced charming, pure wines that are already drinking beautifully. The 2016 reds are some of the finest I’ve tasted from this estate."

wa97"A terrific effort, the 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes is a blend of 50% Grenache, 40% Mourvèdre and 10% Syrah. It's dense and rich almost beyond belief, packed with super ripe fruit that comes dangerously close to being chocolaty and fudge-like, yet it retains a sense of balance. Earth, spice and dark fruit notes linger for minutes on the long, tannic finish. Give it at least a couple of years in the cellar, and drink it over the next decade and a half. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. - Joe Czerwinski"

Made from predominantly old vines, it's intensely concentrated and forward in fruit yet shaded by hints of violet, lavender and bramble. This full-bodied, unctuous wine with fine, gripping tannins should improve through 2030 and hold further. - ANNA LEE C. IIJIMA"

Sweet and expansive on the palate, offering deeply concentrated black raspberry, boysenberry, cola and spicecake flavors that are energized and given spine by a core of juicy acidity. Shows outstanding clarity and fruity thrust on a long, sweet finish framed by smooth tannins. - Josh Raynolds"

jeb dunnuck logo 250"The 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes is up with the crème de la crème of the vintage and in the same league as the perfect 2010. Awesome notes of blackberries, crème de cassis, charred meats, licorice, and violets all soar from the glass. It's powerful, opulent, and structured, with building tannin, a huge mid-palate, and a blockbuster finish, yet it never loses its sense of purity and elegance. It's an incredible achievement from this estate. The blend is 45% Grenache, 45% Mourvèdre, and 10% Syrah, all aged in 55% new French oak.

"With its complex nose melding whiffs of fresh raspberry and violet with savory spice, smoke and nut tones, it's hard not to be mesmerized by this wine's bouquet alone. The palate is pure and lavish, boasting pristine blackberry and mulberry flavors held taut by a firm tannic backbone. It's remarkably integrated and supple now but should improve through 2035 and hold substantially further."

wa300"From barrel, the sensationally rich and concentrated 2015 Châteauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes (50% Grenache, 40% Mourvèdre and 10% Syrah aged in concrete tanks and small barrels) is more polished, elegant and seamless, with blockbuster notes of ripe black fruits, crushed herbs, pepper, plums and violets. You almost need a fork to drink this beauty, yet it’s never heavy or over the top, has incredible purity and present, ripe tannin. I followed this bottle for two days and it only got better with air. Châteauneuf du Pape lovers shouldn’t miss it! - Jeb Dunnuck"

wa93"The 2015 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes is the most backward and impenetrable of the three Grand Veneur cuvées, hence my reluctance in a blind tasting to elevate it above the others. It still shows incredible concentration and promise, combining mocha, cherry and plum notes with masses of chewy tannins. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see it perform better in five or ten years. - Joe Czerwinski"

Medium to full-bodied, beautifully concentrated and layered, with top notch aromas and flavors of cassis, crushed rocks and roasted garrigue, it’s up with the top handful of wines in the vintage and will drink well for a decade or more (which is saying something in 2014). - Jeb Dunnuck"

wa300"Like this estate's Les Origines cuvée, the 2013 Châteauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes will be a candidate for the wine of the vintage. If fact, it's shocking how good this wine is. Made from 40% Grenache, 40% Mourvedre and 20% Syrah that will age 60% in barrel and 40% in concrete tank, it has fabulous dark fruits, graphite, chocolate and minerality in its full-bodied, concentrated profile. The wood component is nicely integrated, and while it has masses of tannin, they're polished and sweet. It should benefit from short term-cellaring and evolve nicely for 10-15 years. - Jeb Dunnuck"

international wine report logo"The 2013 Vieilles Vignes is an absolutely compelling Châteauneuf-du-Pape from Domaine Grand Veneur which comes from vines 50 to 100+ years old, planted on red clay soils covered with pebble stones. It displays a dark inky color, followed by wonderful aromas of dark plums, cherries and raspberries are woven together with lavender, graphite, wet stones and a wonderful savory character of licorice, pepper, spices and a touch of smoke. This well structured, balanced blend of 50% Grenache, 40% Mourvedre and 10% Syrah possesses a gorgeous seamless texture with excellent depth and impressive concentration. Dark fruits and spices continue to resonate on the long, caressing finish. This becomes accessible with extended air, but will need some short-term cellaring before it hits it’s stride. Ultimately, this is one of the most successful wines from this difficult vintage and should not be missed. (Best 2018-2030) - J.D."

It came in at an amazing 16.5% natural alcohol, and is one of the wines of the vintage. A blend of 50% Grenache, 40% Mourvedre and 10% Syrah aged in small barrels, it blows away just about every other Chateauneuf in this vintage. It boasts an inky/purple color in addition to a gorgeous perfume of crushed rocks, jammy black fruits, charcoal and graphite. This intense, full-bodied 2011's concentration and power are atypical for this vintage. It should age nicely for 15 or more years."
